Oyster bulk sub questions

I know that oysters do quite well on a variety of different substrates, so I was considering one of the two options for a bucket tek oyster grow inside of a greenhouse.

Either method I employ will be LC to grain spawn.

I've done a pasteurized mix of coir and coffee for oysters in the past, but this time around I wanted to try a pasteurized 33% mix of coir, coffee, and oak wood shavings. For the guys (and gals) who have grown oysters in the past, do you think that will be a more beneficial bulk sub? Any changes you would make? Thanks.

too much coffee for my taste but the coffee ground growers do it too.
I would just go for straw to  be honest.
you'll get some results on coffee but with subsequent grows your trichoderma problem will grow too.

I would go with one of these the soybean hulls are better though...





I use Espoma chicken manure and be careful with the water. The recipe is what I use. But different brands of HWFP all have different moisture content.

HWFP field capacity is different than growing cubes. Take a hand full and squeeze really hard you want 1 drop at the most. I like to have the water pool around my fingers with no drops. That is the correct field capacity.

I forgot to mention but I did buckets for a while and in my opinion, it is not worth the time. I would do bags. If you want to be environmentally friendly you can use biodegradable bags...

By the time you figure your labor cost for cleaning and filling the buckets the bags save you money.

Appreciate the replies. If I were to go the route of the soy bean hull mix, would the oak wood shavings be a suitable replacement for the fuel pellets? (Only asking because I have them now - if not I can Amazon a bag of the pellets.)

Also, in the bags, just a couple slits for fruiting/fae suffice?

You could use oak wood shavings and soybean hulls. You will just have to mess around with the moisture content to get it right.

Sounds good. Would you throw any coir in the mix or not needed? Thanks again, and the field capacity difference makes sense considering what oysters consume in nature.

Espoma just seems better than anything else I have tried. It has other ingredients in it that seems to help. It is just what I preferred to use. It is not necessary to even use the chicken poo. I just thought it helped. I don't bother with wheat bran recipe anymore. I get heavier yields with soybean hulls and it is less work.

Hoping to have some by this fall, but I have to buy a half of a ton (if the guy still wants to go halfers with me lol) and drive 400 kms to get it.  For now, I’m rockin the bran

I was more wonder why chicken over cow, horse or sheep

To be honest it was suggested by someone and it was easily available. So I used it and noticed an improvement. I never questioned it after that. I only used it for a few months until I switched to soybean hulls. At this point, I am very satisfied with the soybean hulls and their performance. So I will not be looking for anything else in the foreseeable future. I am able to pick up 50 lb bags for 4.67 each so it works out well for me.

As far as the poo goes. I would try what is readily available. I would think the horse would be the best. At the same amounts as I listed and adjust from there. Do a side by side comparison to see if it helps.

I colonize my bags. I then open the reclosable cable ties I use. Then I push out as much air as I can and reclose the cable tie. Then on the bottom of the bag, I make one slice from corner to corner. The reason I use the bottom of the bag is the plastic is tight against the sub. So the only air that gets in is where the slice is. This causes pins only in the slice. slicing from corner to corner makes for one big cluster with bigger fruits. This makes harvesting easier. If you want smaller clusters. Make a few X's. I would still do it on the bottom of the bag. So you don't get fruits inside the bag. If air is allowed to get in the bag you may get fruits inside the bag.
