Mushroom identification x 2 similar mushrooms
    #26089535 -

Hi Guys,

I have picked x2 different but similar looking mushrooms and would like help with identification.

Location- Australia, Victoria, south east suburbs Melbourne.

Mushroom Type 1:

Habitat:
Both grow in the same area- wood chips in a suburban park. Grows on soil/woodchips and leaves.

When pulled out of ground a clunk of dirt/bark chips is attached to the stems.

Gills:
Brown and attached

Stem:
Thicker stem, white in colour with blueish black throughout.Texture is rubbery and feels hollow. Inside of the stem the colour is brown when cut.

Cap:
Brown almost maple brown that has dark spots at the centre of some caps. Some caps have darker brown spots some spots look almost black. One cap looks completely bruised black and was wondering about this?

Bruising:
Bruises a blue/ dirt black

Mushroom Type 2:

Habitat:
Both grow in the same area- wood chips in a suburban park. Grows on soil/woodchips and leaves.

When picked there is no dirt/bark clump. The stem usually breaks when pulled-roots always stay in dirt and gets cut when being pulled out as oppose to Mushroom Type 1 which pulls out of ground very easy with the attached clump or dirt/stuck bark.

Gills:
Lighter brown - moist/flaky- wetter.

Stem:
Thinner stem/ brown and white stem- very soft and moist. Slimy

Cap:
Lighter brown with light brown almost cream like colour gills.

No bruising. Stem either whiter or browner in colour.

Both look like Psilocybe.

I believe it will be difficult to obtain a spore print by the look of the shrooms but I will try.

Thank you for help!!

P.

I'm fairly new to mushroom identification,
but "type 1" group looks to me psilocybe, "type 2" group does not.

Hopefully a T.I. or a more experienced hunter will chip in soon!

Type 1 looks like Psilocybe subaeruginosa to me. Make sure they all bruise blue and spore print purple-brown.

I'm not sure what type 2 are to be honest.

Thanks mate!

I also have some updated pics/spore print! The spore print is brown. No real purple.

In the last 2 pics you can see the black cap- it has been very cold/frosty most mornings in Melbourne for a while now- do you know if the weather is likely the reason?

Im thinking of tossing the black caps as it did not leave a spore print also.

Please let me know if anyone has an knowledge of black/dark blue caps and if they/are safe for consumption. The biggest cap has bruised black/blue spots only but not completely black as one of the other caps.

Thanks again for your help/expertise Legends!

Much love.

P.

The spore prints look fine to me. The spore prints of Psilocybe subaeruginosa can vary quite a bit between brown and purple. Yours are more on the brown side but I can still see a purplish hue. A rusty brown spore print would be concerning, but yours don't look like that. If they are all bruising blue then they are Psilocybe subaeruginosa.

Does the black one feel slimy at all, or smell bad? I would usually throw mushrooms like that away for fear of food poisoning, but I've heard some members here say if you're not sure it's fresh enough, then don't eat it fresh, but dry it until it's cracker dry, and if it's not fresh enough it will easily crumble into dust when its dry.

Yeah spore print looked pretty good.

None of the black caps are slimy or smell bad although i have them pretty cracker dry now and none have much of a smell.

After some research it seems the cold could do it- might just throw out the real black bits to be safe either way although grinding down might be ok.

Thanks again bro!
