All monotubs getting ruined, help!
    #26048152 -

Hei!

I hope someone who is experienced could give me tips of what I should do step by step

Thing is recently (5) monotub got moldy, before first flush(80%) colonised.

The first one I opened accidently without seeing it.

So the others 3 got moldy. I found everything coming from vocation

Then I started all fresh. LC-> Grain. Jars colonised nicely, no bacterial sight of green stuff. Then mixing with coco/verm (pasteurised).
Monotub is made by Pastys TEK (micropore and 4 holes) lid is taped
Giving 6500k 12/12 light from begginning.

But same thing happened :frown: I was so happy the project is going back and everything went to ass. I need to solve this issue, becouse my living is depending on them. Where is mistake? Where should I start?

Ofcourse cleaning will be done, but what materials is best to be used in this kind of situation?

Jars looking good no signs of bacteria or mold, smells good when I open. same LC (used before was fine)

Thank You for all answers

Sincerly, TonyMushrana.

have you tested your LC on agar?
how do you pasteurize?
are you opening you'r jars to smell them?

my guesses would be;

1- those jars (though i have seen them work) are not ideal. standard quarts with bands/lids are better. your spawn may be contaminated without your knowledge. alot of molds look pretty similar to mushroom myc prior to sporulation.

2-your pasteurization process may be to blame. what tek are you using? do you have a thermometer?

3- your spawn might not be getting fully colonized.do you shake your jars? if not, do you allow them to consolodate?

4- when you say they smell ok. are you opening them before they're done?

just spitballing:bongload:

He used coir & verm so pasteurization shouldn't matter. Your other 2 questions are legit though.

Also, when I first started out, I had no idea that putting too much water in the sub (in this case coir & verm) would quickly lead to contamination.

OP, how are you prepping your sub? Adding too much water is a bad idea brother

yeah coir and verm pasteurization does matter. especially if he sterilized it.Also the way he pasteurized could tell me alot about his sub.
who the fuck are you to come into someone else's thread and tell me my trouble shooting questions are not legit.

My guess is the LC is bad. How did you make the LC? As long as water level is good I don't think it matters to much how you prep coir. I've used 2+ week old prepped coir with no problems a few times now. Even let what was left sit unused for a month+ with no mold or contams showing up. No need for ruffled feathers it's a friendly convo

This smells like an LC problem to me.

Im assuming you made your LC with spores straight to LC?

this is notorious for creating dirty cultures, because spores are not clean. Trichoderma could be growing alongside your myc the entire time without your knowledge, because mold myc is white, the spores are colorful.

The correct way to make LC is to isolate clean genetics on an agar plate, and then use those to inoculate the LC.

It could also be one or more of the problems the other posters outlined, just giving my :twocents:

1. These jars were good until now, had few sucessful monotubs
2. I pasteurise coir verm in PC, boil water then throw everything while boiling and closing fast
3. I shake jars always around 20-30%
4. They smell good, I always do smell test, especially when I shake comes very strong mushy smell

LC was made from a clone, took mushroom, I went trough needle and squirted small piece into honey. Then from original I made 5-6 copies, injecting original culture into 2nd culture.

Have used this LC with no problem, got very lucky with genetics, very aggresive LC and mostly just rhyzo.

Not sure if to use these jars or not now....

I have 12 of them all of them are 0,5l almost full and will be colonised in 2-3days 100%

I am very dependant of this hobby, so I am bit frustrated of the news that is happening latelyy

I used same bottle on maybe 30 jars until now. None had any issues colonising.

Only thing is sometimes when I pasteurise coir verm, bottom gets very wet up sometimes dry, then I mix, but by that time temeprature goes bit down. But worked until now like this

Do you open your jars at all before they are going into your monotub? As in do you take the lid off to smell them when shaking?

1. These jars were good until now, had few sucessful monotubs

Every time you use your LC you have the chance of it contaminating. It doesn't stay good forever. You want to test the LC on agar pretty much every time you want to use it for the first time in a while.

2. I pasteurise coir verm in PC, boil water then throw everything while boiling and closing fast

What are the temperatures at and how long do you keep it hot? True pasteurization is holding the substrate temp at 140-160f for 60 to 90 minutes. The widely used "bucket tek" goes past pasteurization and is closer to sterilizing. From my understanding this works for coir because it is very mold resistant so you are just trying to kill off bacteria.

They are opened only before spawning, I usually open them, smell, shake properly, then add little water(fills 10-15% jar) and shake with water and let sit for 5-10min and then I mix it with coir/verm

Well, while its in PC and closed with lid it stays warm quite long. I dont know what temps stays there, but if water is boiling it should be around 100? I used bucket tek just insted bucket everything stays in PC so water temp is the same?

I take heat off at once i throw everything inside

I would look into getting a meat thermometer so you can know for sure (you'll find plenty of uses for it  ), but yeah it sounds like the coir is probably fine.

My money is that the LC has gone bad.

Well already soaking new rye, going to use another LC, made few of them. question is what to do with these 12 jars? Its trash probably?

After this accident I will try to use more G2G then LC all the time...

I will try out now new one, if all good will leave one jar for G2G

So you made a LC without agar? There's your problem. You NEED agar to make LC. You skipped a few steps going straight to LC and it's bitting you in the but now.

Yes, I know

But I am still new, got agar but I cant find petri dishes here where I live or I need to order 1000+

Well I found one TEK and i tought I will give a chance, becouse I got only 1 jar and from it I had to grow my equipment. Took prints, made LC, made G2G.

Maybe I could try to put many of the jars in one monotub and just use little bit of coir verm? Or it will not work anyway?
