hmm i remember some college professors stating to the class that they didnt care if they never saw us, just do the work and be there for the tests. Maybe there were some courses where attendance counted towards points but if you missed there wasnt a lecture to boot.

personally, good for your professor. she obviously holds you to a high standard. I would respect that as her student.

What annoying bullshit :crankey:

No, it's an RN course and I agree with that. Even in rural OK it was the same morrow. Be fucking early people! I don't understand consistently late people, like ALWAYS 15 mins late exactly! Why not fucking leave 15-20 mins earlier??? NO EXCUSES!

How much are you paying for tuition and books for that class? $800? With how much class time? 3 hours a week for 14 weeks? 42hrs total ~ $19/hr you are paying to not show up.

If you have student loans you'll be paying for that missed class time for years to come. Probably not the most important issue behind punctuality, but still another reason to give a shit for school.

I don’t get why people equate being an uptight cunt and mandating attendance with caring about your students. If you care about your students make your classes engaging enough for your students to want to attend.

Yeah it basically amounts to treating a university student like a high school or grade school student. IMO university should be about results (ability to demonstrate mastery of the material), not a table of checkboxes for showing up. Not every university student is a kid fresh out of high school with no competing obligations that may on occasion outweigh attending.

At a community college it can be even worse, with life skills busywork courses and so on. Plus petty insecure instructors who try to convince themselves that taking off lots of marks for arbitrary reasons means that the program is more rigorous academically. My wife is in a RPN program (one step under RN) and their idea of increasing the difficulty of the math class for drug dose calculations was requiring that you do long division and multiplication and show your work under a strict time limit. Why is that an important skill in 2019? There is no reason not to allow use of a simple calculator.

It's simple stuff but they give so little time that many fail. At a certain point you are mostly just testing how fast people can write.

That is lame. Glad I never experienced that in University. University is for adults. You pay to be there. You pay for the classes. You pay to write the tests. No professor should give you shit for not showing up or sleeping in class. It’s not grade 10 lol.

This is new to me. Here in USA it's LPN (one step under RN, Licensed Practical Nurse or LVN, Licensed Vocational Nurse.) The math thing is just in case there is a major power outage and there is absolutely no generators or any kind of battery powered way to get an electronic device to calculate. I think it's overkill as well, but that is the way they do it here too, not as intense, but we still have to know how to do it on paper. Then when you get into a facility it's all done for you on a calculator and comp, plus another person checks it.

So I have this teacher, and I missed part of one of her classes and she goes off the rails. I will admit it was an important part of the class, but I made a calculated decision and thought it was worth it given the circumstances. So she goes and announces to the whole class the policy in her syllabus about attendance. Then she messages me the announcement and tells me to read it.

Then when I'm in her office getting feedback on a paper she again brings it up and says "I saw you missed part of class the other day and you should have stayed for that part. I'm going to have to take points off for that." I'm like "seriously lady, just take the points off already. Why are you still bringing this up? Yes, I missed part of that class. I know you saw me leave and I left anyways. What do you want from me? Take the points off, we're all adults here I don't need someone to tell me when I broke a rule."

So far I've got an A in her class anyways with extra credit so I'm not worried about my final score. This same teacher has called me a "model student" in the past to guest speakers before, so I don't normally have any issues with her. Believe it or not I actually really like this teacher. I've had her once before. I think we're just too similar. I've had that issue before with other people that I actually really like and admire, but I just can't be around them because of how we clash. She does that to everyone, and she likes to argue. She's actually given me extra points in the past for making good arguments. Unfortunately, its a package deal, and with the good comes the drama.

I'm paraphrasing with what I told her earlier. I'm always polite and respectful of course, but man she was very persistent in letting me know what she thought.

'Points' outside of tests/papers/projects are retarded once you're no longer in elementary school. They're basically admitting that their teaching is worthless if they have to rely on attendance points instead of letting the consequence of missing class speak for itself through lack of some sort of insight that you cant get anywhere else.. which is rarely the case. I've had prof's really similar to her who also called me a 'model student'.. and were later "disappointed". That's almost always a red flag imo. The 'model' of what a student should be starts clouding reason, instead of doing their damn job and placing the conveying the material in the most effective way above all else.

I will get to see her for the last time tomorrow. One of two things will happen. 1. She will take this opportunity to express her displeasure. 2. We leave off on a good note and look back on the whole experience a bit wiser. I’m hoping for 2.

Last minute changes to a paper she will look over for me that could result in a higher grade. It is VERY far out of my way to do, but it is an opportunity for a higher grade.

The guiding question here, is it worth it? I don't know if it will be. It may result in a slightly higher grade, but more than anything it's personal at this point. I also want to ask if I can use her a reference in the future.

I've had two classes with her, and even if I dipped out early and got caught once I still think she could a valuable contact down the road. I'm pretty sure we're on the same page here and I do feel bad about dipping out on her once so maybe this is my chance to atone for that.

So anyways, I'm going there now. I just printed out my final draft. It is a bit of an annoyance, but I feel a sort of obligation to go.

At least there is some rationale to it. On the other hand, solar calculators exist.

My wife is kind of dyslexic when it comes to math but is pretty well versed in the art of nursing. She just wants this to be done. She is already trained as a PSW (not sure what the US equivalent is but next level down basically) but she has this persistent shoulder problem and can't do PSW type work any more.

Alright, that actually went pretty well. I have a warm and fuzzy now I’m glad I went. I accomplished mostly what I set out to do. I didn’t get a Janice to ask about using her as a reference, but I’m just glad to be done really. These last two weeks have just been really taxing. I’m just so drained right now.
