Professor giving me shit for missing part of a class

So I have this teacher, and I missed part of one of her classes and she goes off the rails. I will admit it was an important part of the class, but I made a calculated decision and thought it was worth it given the circumstances. So she goes and announces to the whole class the policy in her syllabus about attendance. Then she messages me the announcement and tells me to read it.

Then when I'm in her office getting feedback on a paper she again brings it up and says "I saw you missed part of class the other day and you should have stayed for that part. I'm going to have to take points off for that." I'm like "seriously lady, just take the points off already. Why are you still bringing this up? Yes, I missed part of that class. I know you saw me leave and I left anyways. What do you want from me? Take the points off, we're all adults here I don't need someone to tell me when I broke a rule."

So far I've got an A in her class anyways with extra credit so I'm not worried about my final score. This same teacher has called me a "model student" in the past to guest speakers before, so I don't normally have any issues with her. Believe it or not I actually really like this teacher. I've had her once before. I think we're just too similar. I've had that issue before with other people that I actually really like and admire, but I just can't be around them because of how we clash. She does that to everyone, and she likes to argue. She's actually given me extra points in the past for making good arguments. Unfortunately, its a package deal, and with the good comes the drama.

I'm paraphrasing with what I told her earlier. I'm always polite and respectful of course, but man she was very persistent in letting me know what she thought.

Feel fortunate that your professor gives a fuck about you showing up or leaving early.  My experience in college was the professors didn’t give a fuck about you unless you were a hot chick.

I’m old and went to college a long time ago. Some classes, especially foreign language had oral assignments, if you missed one of those you failed. No one took attandance. They charge you guys ten times as much. Constantly put you in discussion groups so the professors don’t have to lecture. Many professors run so many group activities they almost never lecture. That learning from your peers shit is garbage. I don’t want to hear what the guy next to me thinks. I’m paying to learn from a fucking expert. Limited class discussion is fine but this shit where the students take over is lazy bullshit. But the last thing that’s so crazy as they treat you like children like the OP described. No one gave a fuck if I came to class or passed or failed except me. That’s the way it should be.

I do get the feeling that college students today sort of act like children too. Like talking and playing computer games and messing with your phones during class. That’s pretty lame. You’re paying for the class so show up ready to learn.

That’s my experience too. That’s why I was like “why are we even talking about this?” This isn’t even my first degree. I’ve had other classes like that. I even had a teacher say once “if your mother dies the first day and your grandmother dies the second day, you fail the class.” (Insinuating you missed class because of it) It was the second to last day of class that I missed and I know this teacher pretty well, I’ve had her before so I know what to expect from her, and I knew she would not like it.

I think because she has praised me before the fact that I would skip an important assignment I think she took it personally. I completely agree though I don’t think it should be the teachers responsibility to praise or scold your students in college. She’s from a different culture though so I think in her culture the student teacher relationship is a bit different than in North America.

It is, actually. Did you provide her your perspective? Did you offer an explanation?

A professor actually cares about their student performance and you're giving her shit for it? Without knowing the situation, an alternative is to stop skipping class, put in some effort, and realize your potential.

I did not provide an explanation for her. I had one all prepared. I had what I thought were good reasons, but I wouldn’t classify any of them as an “emergency” which I explained. She wasn’t interested in hearing my excuses. She just wanted me to know she caught me and wasn’t happy about it.

I know the exact number of points that assignment is worth and considering my extra credit and current grade I’m not terribly concerned about it. It was just the reaction I got from it that surprised me. I do feel really bad about skipping out, but like I said I thought it was the right decision at the time. I would have been more than happy to have explained that.

I guess I could message her to follow up and offer my explanation. I just assumed she didn’t want to hear it. I’m sure most teachers are used to hearing lane excuses from students all the time so unless she explicitly asks me I’m not going to waste her time with my BS.

I’m going to be optimistic here and think she’s just being hard on me because she believes in me and actually cares about my performance since we have built somewhat of a relationship over the courses of hers that I’ve taken.

Also, about the potential. I swear I am utilizing it to its furthest extent. This was the only day I missed of her class and considering I’m almost finished with the degree overall I have above average attendance. I’m a straight A student even in this class, on the deans list, so I swear this was an aberration. Which is why I wanted to discuss it.

My biggest issue right now is that I have one more paper I have write for her, and this one actually does count for a significant portion of my grade, and I’m currently on her bad side. Well, I don’t have to write the paper just finish it. She’s already given me feedback on it and I just have to make the changes, though I’m sure she will recall this hole she is grading it. I’m just going to hope that all of our experience together is a stronger weight than that last incident.

In my experience assistant professors tend to feel pressured to act like hard asses. Tenured professors are more chill. My professor for classical sociological theory in grad school said on the first day that attendance was not mandatory. I'm sure it helped to hear what he had to say and read the assigned stuff, but if you could write one good paper each on Marx, Durkheim and Weber you could get an A.


I had a French teacher in undergrad who graded down for attendance. We had one class that would have been cool cause they brought in all this French food. I came in really hung over. She asked me what was up and I said I was there for the attendance but if I tried to eat anything I would puke.


I had a grad seminar in Sociology of Science taught by this cool English dude. He came in so hung over his chin was on the table. He smoked in class which wasn't allowed but he was hired with tenure. He had one coke can to drink out of and one to ash in. When he started to drink his ashtray we tried not to laugh too much.

oh...my...goodness. I think I just found my new spirit animal.  I had two teachers melt down in class on two separate occasions, those were both awkward I felt really bad. I had nothing to do with it I just witnessed it. Well, I need to get to work. Wish me luck.

I've heard of some who will make a big scene in class any time someone is late, creating a much bigger distraction than just the person coming in and sitting down. Seems like they take it personally. And I get that it's hard not to, I worked as a TA for a few years and feeling unappreciated seems pretty standard.


My profs in computer science were generally pretty down to earth. None of those "call me Dr. ______" type power trips. And generally no mandatory attendance for anything. Do the projects and pass the exams and you pass, and if you can do that without going to any classes then more power to you.
