does the mycelium of golden oyster look week hen just on grain? I ordered some from aloha but it looks very week when on grain.

Yes it does, you will need to expand or mix the grain until it produces thick populated growth (desired growth).
I prefer small bird seed, but I also use brown rice. Fully colonized seed works very well.

General guide:

Expand or mix your grain or seed until thick populated growth is observed (everything is white), how many expansions varies.
Make sure the end media is nutritional, otherwise the vigorous mycelium will change to low nutrition mycelium.

In order to use spawn as enrichment, around 50-50 can be used (100g dry grain, 100g dry wood) *.

Edits:

In general high spawn ratios will contain much more starch than bran enriched medias (not ideal).

Be sure to smell the colony (any area with holes), and fruit bodies, it's extremely distinguishable and unique.
You can tell it's a Tarragon colony just by the smell (in case you muddle spawn).

Fruit bodies are robust and not overly fragile, the texture is soft.
It also produces trumpet caps, and loves rain.

Where did you get your Tarragon spawn? I would like to try it. But I can't find it.

Using LC from 'gourmet woodland mushrooms', a UK website, To agar > to grain > to supplemented sawdust. Just got back& my backup jar's fruiting, it seems the bags are just forming primordia so It'll be about a week till I get can some picz :evil: :evil:

Notes:

I think the wavy caps in the vendor images are due to humidity and-or oxygen differences, not 100% sure, normally they produce radial (circular) caps.
Unlike King oyster, Tarragon oyster fatten up in high oxygen, it also uptakes nutrients to oxygen (further decay-other).

The smell is much more potent when the media has been enriched, in my case WL-Tek.

The jar looks like it's drying out a bit (turning yellow), otherwise it looks ok. Try adding some wet vermiculite or similar on top.
That bag looks great so far, give it some time to work with the higher O2 (distribute-produce nutrients).

Oxalate is a key inhibitor then, does then removing the waste continue production or is there more to it?

I wouldn't call it a key inhibitor in all cases, it's more than likely the case with 'acid free paper' (inhibitory and other materials removed).

Removing the waste can increase the total number of flushes, rain can wash away or dilute produced waste products.
There is more to it though, if the mycelium runs out of nutrients, removing the waste won't do much.

Mycelium acidify substrates overtime, depending on the pH, various enzymes may perish.

I assume waste products are also common on traditional substrates? If mycopoop prolongs pinhead formation, that extra time will surely mean nutrients are lost to mycelium, lowering fruitbody potential no?  :rasta:

Waste products occur on any substrate, even if it's not secreted metabolites, the end product will be waste. I've seen molds turn a sandwich into a solid tiny lump of black waste (probably carbon-other).

Not much nutrients will be lost to time, mycelium decay materials, so if you are worried about vitamins decaying to time, it's not going to be much of an issue.
The only issue is if the material converts overtime into an unusable one (does not decay), or it's lost as a gas (no longer present).

In terms of time, the greatest loss will likely be carbon and water (expelled CO2 and evaporation).


Reminder: Rain can wash away, and-or, dilute secreted metabolites, it also hydrates.

Extra notes:

If the mycelium throws away 50 units of carbon as CO2, but spent no nitrogen, every 24 hours, the following would happen:

400:1 > 350:1 > 300:1 > 250:1 > 200:1 > 150:1 > 100:1 > 50:1 > Start fruiting.


I have noticed increased yield, and less waste when the nitrogen ratio is satisfactory (data here).

The nutrients/vitamins could still be viable then, water absorption is possible, but carbon.. could be added to water to air to sub in a casing even, Coco coir had the most increase in yield then or is it the other way?

If you are measuring and adding different amounts of nitrogen so coir and wood where the same, probably not much difference.
If you use the same amount on both substrates, technically the coir would do better (more nitrogen).

Coir contains about 4x more nitrogen than wood, but it's still only 0.4% (average).

Do these look like secretions? At first I though spores because it's directly below gills but it's completely covered on the top caps too
