Looking healthy but not fruiting, Tarragon Oyster
    #25933660 -

Had this bag and a twin to it in the incubator for good time now,

Solid growth however it hasn't had any pinheads after 4-5 days now, I can see lumps but they've been the same from the beginning.

Any help is much appreciated,

Andrés

Poke some holes in it and it’ll fruit out of them (if it’s going to)....they need FAE to fruit.

:whathesaid:

You need to poke a hole in the top of the bag and deflate the bag as much as you can then where ever the bag is not lifted off of the sub. Slice from corner to corner. If you do it this way they will only fruit from the slice in the bag. You don't want it to fruit under the bag. As stated above you can poke holes in the bag but if you slice you will get one big cluster.

Taragon oyster will fruit in vitro. They need cold shock.

Nothing I’ve read on them mentions vernalization or cold shocking.  Seems they fruit at 70-80F.  Ferather has grown them and provides additional info here: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/23611616/fpart/all/vc/1

Most shit will pin in vitro, and for those species that don’t need a cold shock, FAE is what really triggers fruiting.

There's already some holes with micropore tape, it needs to be fresh though right? Remove the tape?

If they show no progress I do have a colder room with high humidity available, or are you suggesting I DUNK?

I’d cut 2 small x’s where indicated.  If you have a room in the high 60 to low-to-mid 70F with high rh, that would likely be ideal.

I had them pin after cold shock. They pinned at 50% colonization and I think from my experience that cold shock is a pinning trigger for taragon oysters. I proposed cold shocking because Andre mentioned the substrates sitting in fruiting room for long without pining. I don't disagree with the slits you suggested or FAE but the filter on his bag should easily allow pining. Just saying. How long have they been sitting in the fc?

Been there 7days now, the holes are cut now & in the cold room at 17C, 85% RH. If nothing happens still I'll give them cold shock, pinning at 50% is really good, did it colonise to 100% afterwards?

Anything pinning before full colonization, especially at 50%, would suggest contamination to me.

@mojotoke: No, it would keep pining in vitro. I don't know if it could eventually colonize the rest of the substrate but it would be a mess with the strange growth in the bag anyway. I washed the non colonized substrate away and fruited them.

@Mycolorado: Could be the case, although it was not only 1 bag.

I have never grown Terragon Oysters. But every oster that I have grown (amycel 3015, aloha Pink, aloha yellow and aloha elma) Will fruit without poking or cutting holes in the bag. but they will take forever and a day. The mycelium will grow up the bag to the filter patch go through the filter patch and then fruit. Or it will eat through the bag and fruit. I happen to have some that I forgot about that did this very thing here are the pics I just took 5 mins ago...

As you can tell they are dried out. But that is because they use so much energy growing up the bag to the fresh air. They were too small for me to do anything with so I left them and forgot about them again.

1st pic no pins in the bag. It just pined once it grew through the filter
2nd pic same thing as 1st
3rd pic ate through the bag then fruited.
4 pic went past the filter and grew to the top of the bag then fruited through the top where I use reclosable cable ties.

These are my results. You might have different results with that species.
anytime I have left the bags they never pin in the bag. They always go to the filter or top of the bag and pin there. The bags have a 5 micron filter on them by the way.

Well that's quite something, I've heard of them eating through bags before. Could be quite promising for the future of recycling don't you think? Seriously after biodegradable options

They stop eating the plastic once they get a hole in the bag to fruit out of. I don't know if eat is the right word either, But they are doing something to get to fresh air.

Tarragon (not Terragon) are a mid-range oyster, fruiting at 20-28°C, I've had fruiting as far down as 8°C, on enriched medias.
It's extremely aggressive and very resourceful, adapting usually very quickly to new medias (if done right).

Over the years I have not had pinning at less than 100% colonized, and not requiring the cold.
Pinning and fruiting occurs when higher oxygen levels are detected, or present.

Tarragon oyster will directly grow all over plastic in order to obtain more oxygen, it detects the source.

If I leave the lid on for too long, it attempts to fruit in areas with the highest oxygen.

----

Open the bag or cut holes as suggested.

I was using the quick reply and have altered the reply addressee, my apologize, and you are welcome.

Here are some additional images of Tarragon oyster colonizing enriched paper pellets, at room temperature.
As the mycelium reaches higher O2, it physically changes, and fruits from the surface area.

Its clearly changing form, is there a name for this? My spawn jars colonised from the top down so there's this effect in reverse. Only seeing lumps where there's air space so the main cut's at the top not to disrupt it.

I'll get the HD cam out back and post the growth when I'm back in town,
Thanks a bunch

Surface growth I guess, the lumps might be due to various factors, such as high-low nutrition or contamination.
Golden oyster can grow out weak on low nutrition, later colonizing previous areas more densely.

I think Tarragon is related to Branched oyster (and Golden oyster).
Tarragon is more vigorous than Golden at colonizing.

The above is Golden (low nutrition).
