Unneeded Plates

Third time caller long time listener. Very new to agar.

I'm wondering what you all do with healthy looking plates that are unneeded. I have chosen to transfer other plates...but feel bad just tossing them...

I hate it as well Haha but it's what needs to be done ...


You can leave them sitting around till they pin and take clones or it feels better once they look so ugly Haha

Make slants? Throw em into grain jars, enjoy it man, just don’t throw em away! Lol
I haven’t had any success with a purely clean agar plate yet. I had a lot more success with presterilized Petri dishes than I did no pour plates, now I’m trying mason jars as dishes but I’m really considering buying glass Petris...

Let them grow out all the way then put them in the fridge for later. They'll stay good for a while, then you can throw them on grain when you're ready.

I chuck a bunch of them in a jar of sterile water with a couple of pre sterilised coins inside and make a big agar slurry

bottom pics middle 3 look like myc. needs to grow out but id transfer a few more times.

also keep your dishes somewhere clean. the floor/on top of deadhead swag are not the best spots:oldman:

I appreciate the input brother, I'll keep making transfers until I get those perfect symmetrical plates I have seen pictured around these parts.

I suppose I'll throw the decent ones to grains and the okay ones in the garden...

I am just fruiting what grew on plates looking very similar to those. Smells and looks like cubes, so idk. My growth on plates is never as nice as you see it around here, could it be because of hard water?

What? I'm saying that I grew cubes from what looks very similar to the plate that has been marked as "mold" by other users.

Yeah,  a lot of those have contams.  You could toss those if you have plenty of good ones.  I 2nd storing clean cultures in the fridge.  Never know when you'll need back ups.  Especially when being noob.  :rofl2:

There are never such a thing as unneeded plates, cultures, spawn
Use the other to pick the best looking one
Use the extra by making extra spawn
Pin some plates and clone

Save em in the fridge.  They'll basically go into hibernation.  I've seen them work just fine after sitting in the fridge for 13 months.  Just keep them in a sealed bag so there isn't as much air exchange since getting dried out could kill it.

I tossed the sketchiest in the graveyard, kept the best and transferred three more plates today.

Any thoughts?

Transfer the bottom part of the bottom plate - can't tell if the top side of it is just weak myc or something else (I.e., contaminated), but the bottom part looks strong enough to be worth growing on its own.

Middle row the two at the far right and the one at far left

Far right I see 4 sections so have 8 plates ready
One next to it I see 3 so 6 plates
And the left one I can't see just do as many transfers as you want

If all the "3" plates are the same variety I'd scrap (or put in cold storage) all except the far right culture. That culture is looking far better than the others. I'd grab three or four from the 12 - 5 oclock position on that one and a few from the 3-7 oclock on the bottom culture (#2).

i quit messing with weak looking plates a while back. If i've got mutliple plates from the same culture, only the strongest get transferred. Other wise i end up with a gigantic wall of petris. Trust me, there are still enough genetics on the far right #3 plate to take you to the moon and back a few hundred times (IE; accomplish anything you want).
