Pasteurizing Coir Idea
    #25910041 -

After sterilizing agar in my PC today, I had an idea that could make pasteurizing coir a lot easier for me. My pressure cooker has a 'stand-by' mode which keeps the water at 66C (150.8F) until you turn it off. It does not build pressure in this mode, you can keep the lid off if you wanted to.
I know that proper pasteurization takes place around 160F-165F, but after looking through posts and a few google searches I found that people in the food industry (and occasionally mush cult) use temps lower than 60F for pasteurization (For example milk is commonly pasteurized at 145F for 30 minutes).
I was wondering if you think that putting quart jars in the PC (at 0 PSI and 150.8 F) for a few hours or even overnight would suffice for pasteurization?

You need to keep the lid on the jars to ensure that the temp is 150° inside the jars but there really isn't a need for pasturizing coir. And 2hrs should be more than enough at 150. And the vast probably close to 95% of the milk that is consumed in the us, cheese, yogurt, cottage cheese, ect, is not vat pasteurized is almost certainly ran through an htst or tubular pasteurization system.

You could do that.. it only takes 1-1.5hrs to pasteurize though so overnight would be overkill. My thought is why bother pasteurizing coir in the first place? It is super super clean, so much so that you can get away without treating it at all if you were feeling lazy. But I have always been happy adding vermiculite and boiling water. Recently I ran an experiment where I made ~50 gallons of coir verm substrate with boiling water in a big container, put the lid on and let it sit for 8 weeks. When I checked it the other day, it was still moist, had not been opened, and had not grown any mold! It's great stuff

I was only saying I ~could~ leave it overnight if necessary because It would take a while to get the jar temps up and even then it's lower then the recommended 165F. I wasn't sure if you needed to leave it longer if it's at a lower temperature (150 vs 165).

If you’re putting coir in a PC just crank that shit up and sterilize it. The mushrooms like a well cooked meal. Some idiot made a thread on sterilization of coir a while ago. Turned out pretty IIRC

Damm that's pretty sick, do you sterilize all your coir now? I was loathing the preparation for another "Frank's Proper Pasteurization Tek", that'd be nice to just chuck em in the PC for an hour..

depends. if i dont need all the coir anytime soon ill bag it up and run it for 30min. ive had coir mold and also sit for months without molding.

but secured sterilized coco will never ever mold.

Coir doesn't need to be pasteurized. Pasteurization is for manure because it wont kill a certain bacteria which makes manure contaminate resistant on it's own.

With coir/verm streaming hot water that's been brought to a boil is all that is required.
