I also was wondering that. Could i buy a spliter and some ethernet wire and run it upstairs to my other computer. If i can how much does ethernet wire cost per foot, just a general idea so i know how much im gonna be spending.

well, yes you can. And its not much, I dont know exactly, but its worth the price (I know I got a 5PortHUB, two 15foot CAT5s and some other stuff for $90 (canadian) but I ended up returning it because I dont want it :P

Don't bother with 100BaseT. It's much more expensive and you won't notice any difference whatsoever, since even fast computers are too slow for 100BaseT. 100BaseT is primarily used for very large networks with typically fast computers...
Using 100BaseT will be a waste of money.

Bullshit 100bt is for large networks... Ythan and I run at 100bt full duplex between our computers. Its great for network games of Unreal Tournament with no lag or copying files between computers. True, maby you dont use all of the bandwidth, but at least it puts the bottleneck on the computers

100baseT / 10baseT for home use I doubt you'd ever notice a differance.

To give your home network that kick in the pants, move to a SWITCHED ethernet hub and avoid those packet collisions and get FullDuplex operation.

And if you REALLY want to make the puter the bottleneck, get a couple Gigabit ethernet adapters and a switch to match it :wink: Fuck copper, GO FIBRE!

I have never seen a "splitter" for ethernet. Best buy 2 nics for your linux box. (Even better, go Free BSD :smile:), alot more easier to set up firewalls and IP forwarding if you want to have more than 1 computer on the network.

If you want to just run internet through the network, go the 10Mbit, if you want to run games go the 100Mbit, as long as the hub can go to 100Mbit.
