Reishi species and medicinal properties
    #25893875 -

There seems to be a lot of confusion about the species complex that is reishi.

Could anyone comment about the differences in medicinal propeties between Asian (e.g. G. lingzhi), European (e.g. G. lucidum) and American (e.g. G. sessile or G. tsugae) reishi?

I'm interested in this myself.

I know Mr. Cloudy has extensive Ganoderma knowledge. Perhaps there might be some info in his Ganoderma thread. Or contacting him directly.

dont know the technicalities but here in Asia nobody seems to give a s**t to other species of Ganoderma other than G. Lucidum. Every pharma companies ask for only Ganoderma Lucidum and that too a very few strains.

The thing is that I have heard or read possibly also in Mr Cloudy's thread which I know, that often enough if you ask for reishi in the US and might expect G. lucidum you may actually get sessile or tsugae or something like that.

In an article it said the profiles of medicinal compounds do vary significantly (if not in the clade then at least the genus) but there are quite a few medicinal compounds in reishi so it's hard to conclude something if there is more of some and less than others.

I also have no idea whether the beta-glucans in reishi species are really that special compared to the ones in other plentiful medicinal mushrooms that have beta-glucans or whether this means that the ganoderic acid / terpenoids are more "special". Let alone how black or yellow reishi types may compare.

I grow reishi for reasons that don't necessarily require me to be on top of this but I think it's worth knowing this stuff before capitalizing on the medicinal benefits of these kinds of polypores.

It's not super surprising if lucidum is popular if it is also the most studied, although that says nothing about how much worse or different the others are considered to be per se. Isn't G. lingzhi popular in Asia? I know it's very rare in nature but it should not really matter for cultivation, which might even help.

G.lingzhi is the proper name for what is commonly called G.lucidum in much of Asia, in the more southern regions like Thailand, G.multipileum is often more common but still called G.lucidum. G.lingzhi is genetically more similar to the American G.curtisii than to true G.lucidum.

There have been no real studies on American Ganoderma that I am aware of but I haven't looked into the medicinal side of things in a few years. Most of what I saw was done on Chinese "lucidum" and all seemed to agree that it contained the most medicinal compounds, but these were also mostly Chinese studies funded by Chinese companies... so some bias may be present... I do think there was a western study a while back that pitted true European lucidum against Chinese G.lingzhi and did confirm that G.lingzhi was higher in certain compounds, but I do not recall the name of the study.

One interesting thing to note is that recently we have confirmed that Ganoderma lucidum itself is indeed present in the United States, but only in a few select locations out west, Northern California, and Salt Lake City, Utah. This seems to be an introduction of this species into the wild. The two populations seem to be quite strong.

A friend of mine who was here told me that G.lucidum even has less medicinal compounds than other Ganoderma species, but that growers keep growing G.lucidum because it is more well known (the species) @mrcloudy, do you know anything about this?

You really don't see G. lingzhi a lot do you? That's just the name? G. lucidum is said to be European. It would be incredible what floppy said if it's true, that would mean that G. lingzhi has less medicinal compounds as well if it is synonymous, but it is like the original archaic Reishi isn't it? (lingzhi)

I know I formulated a relatively simple question that can expect a simple answer, but it would be good to see how the medicinal compounds were actually measured because it seems like it can be rather complicated to just give an easy quantitative rating. Maybe it's better to test efficacy by checking certain markers like immunological, antihypertensive iirc? Just a few major ones.

Good to know about curtisii! I will stay skeptical of course but it sounded interesting anyway.

I should also point out I am interested in making different colors of myc for biomaterial and art purposes. So I guess barking and laminating species may be best, especially if they have distinct colors and features.

John Holliday is with Aloha Medicinals right? I do believe I have grown their "G.tsugae" strain, though it may have been Fungi Perfecti (it was about 5 years ago). But which ever it was turned out to be Ganoderma sessile, both in morphology with a brown flesh rather than the white of tsugae as well as DNA sequences, spores, etc. My guess is that culture was cloned from a rogue G.sessile growing on a conifer, which sometimes happens, and the collector made the assumption that it must be tsugae because common knowledge at the time was that G.tsugae is the only Ganoderma that grows on conifer. Ganoderma tsugae itself tends to be tricky to cultivate and I never was successful in fruiting it, though I have a friend who has been.

Have a look at this recent study that does an excellent job distinguishing between the various laccate "Reishi" species of the United States.  This is the most thorough overview to date on American species. Though I am admittedly biased as I am one of the authors.

https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0199738

This should help dispel the idea that Ganoderma is a species complex once and for all. The different varieties are able to be cleanly, clearly and reliably separated out based on morphological features, with the DNA evidence reliably backing up the individual species concepts.

Asian markets, and any imports from China will be overwhelmingly G.lingzhi sometimes with a few other Asian species thrown in. I am aware of one study, though I don't remember the name which compared European G.lucidum sensu stricto against G.lingzhi and found G.lucidum to be lacking in the suspected medicinal compounds when compared side by side. But much more research needs to be done because of the diversity of Ganoderma species.
