Except it is even if you know what you're doing
the mountain is covered in snow all year round it sounds like and it's almost verticle in some parts and it's very very tall being blasted with sun day by day

it's probably the dumbest thing a person could do besides putting on a wing suit

what do you mean? it is what? the goal is killing yourself? if thats all people wanted to do they woupdnt have to go to a mountain.

its hard therefore its stupid?

and besises OP didnt ask if it was stupid. he asked why people do it. why seems pretty self evident to me. didnt you ever climb trees as a kid?

there is a certain percentage of chance in which it isn't chance anymore

but in the case of life and death if 10% of people died doing something
then I wouldn't give it a go
because I would have to witness it in person

you wouldnt give it a go which means its not worth doing or respecting?

that percentage is 100%. anything less than 100% is a chance not a certainty. if you pass a test that you felt good about does that have the same feeling as passing a test you thought you were going to fail? beating the odds is exciting.

adventure is what makes humans different. was it stupid to leave africa and thrive in all sorts of different climates and environments including total opposites? was it stupid to put a man on the moon? im sure there is a way higher chance of dying on a moon mission than while climbing most mountains. was it stupid for the first americans to fight off the largest empire in human history to create the freest country in history?

people tell stories about people who faced danger head on and succeeded. the first story ever written is a hero story. the epic of gilgamesh. thats what makes people people. we are hungry for adventure.

we admire and revere heros. the ones who face danger head on.

you can say you dont get it. but i bet when you watch movies or read books about heros who take chances and dont back down you are gripped by the story. if you have ever enjoyed a movie or book centered around a protagonist who overcomes difficulty then on some level you understand.

like half the dwarves die in the hobbit. thats a 50% chance of dying yet people still love that story decades after it was written.

Yeah no that's just luck and natural selection
No will power involved in any of that

If there is some dangerous activity you could point out where people survive no matter the situation that would be interesting, but in those circumstances I feel they are differentiating themselves from 99% of people, so 99% of people wouldn't even be allowed to try it in the first place.

your posts are really degenerating into nonsense.

what is just luck and natural selection? there is no willpower involved in what?

if people survive no matter what its not dangerous. why is that interesting?

99% of people wouldnt be allowed to try what? who is the one deciding who is allowed?

my point is all people have the call to adventure. some want to climb mountains, some want to camp in the wilderness, some people want to scubadive, some peope want to be astronauts. but we all experience the call to advanture to some degree.

lol all the people that invented wing suits as a sport are dead

they're falling horizontally when they do it
so imagine falling but now just moving in a slightly forward direction

I mean...I get it, I do. To an extent anyway. Honestly what this (climbing in winter, or climbing a new route on a mountain that is more death defying than the previous) boils down to is bragging rights. Competition.

It used to be:

Climb a mountain via the smartest & safest route. To get to the summit. To set foot somewhere where either very few humans have, or in some cases, no humans at all.

But now that all the highest peaks in the world have been reached -- now it's I wanna go in a more dangerous season than the previous climber. And if that's been done in winter, then now it's I'm going to go via a much more insane route with a higher chance of death.

Nanga Parbat, in winter, has been reached. Only once. But yeah it's been done. So what did Nardi & Ballard want to do (the 2 climbers who just perished there)? They wanted to go an even more insane route than the two dudes who reached it in winter in 2016.

Here's what Simone Moro (one of the climbers who reached in winter in 2016; the first to ever reach the summit of Nanga Parbat in winter) had to say about what just happened:

Quote:
“Every day the spur sees avalanches or falling ice chunks like cars, which explode on impact,” Mr Moro recalled.

“This year Nardi would have been the first to make the ascent via the spur, and it would have been the first historic climb of his career, but it was madness. If we continue to say they were just unlucky, the risk is someone will die there next year,” he added.

They were attempting a route along what is known as the "Mummery Spur". Moro also said it was "suicidal".

https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/partner-of-lost-climber-tom-ballard-was-obsessed-with-killer-mountain-mtmzkflhr?shareToken=a6769151e9c61b9ebfe34799afa78b26

When a guy who has enough screws loose to attempt Nanga in winter like Moro (and I say that in the most endearing way possible), and even he's saying it's "madness" and "suicidal"...that's saying a lot.

Have y’all seen the video of the dude who hit a bridge railing while wingsuiting? He was almost cut in half and died instantly.

well thats something that nobody will survive. however you can successfully climb a mountain.

the goal is not killing yourself. its doing something hard and risky without killing yourself. the goal is making it through.

its the same reason somebody learns to do a flip. they dont just dive into the ground head first because they want to break their neck. they want to do a cool trick without breaking their neck.

People have survived jumping from airplanes with no parachutes, why couldn't I survive that? If I can get the horse to land in a tree, or jump off it at the last second then land in a tree, I'm sure I could survive.

The physical difference between hitting something with feet of 'give' - even if its pretty nasty like a big bush or a tree, or even water is survivable at terminal atmospheric velocity for humans - is a massive difference than landing on any sort of land.. Only snow or swamp more or less - other than bushes/trees/water is survivable. And as I'm sure anyone is aware, water is not optimal and would require an extremely precise landing to even have a chance of just walking away with a few broken bones

well why dont you go and do it because you are acting like an autistic 12 year old who just wants to poke holes in everything people say to feel smart. you even do it in the funnies thread.

whats next is music just a pointless sequence of sounds that you are too smart for? :nerd:

incase anybody didnt catch on i was joking. i dont want you to jump off a building on a horse. i dont think that would be wise. do not try this at home
