missing 6 days terrible weather and the Pakistanis are being dicks about money and the fact that they're in an "open war" with India. I guess they shot thier load on their 40,000€ deposit on the Thursday flights.

When this thread first came up, I was like "oh, it's cool..doesn't matter if it's Winter or Summer, because there'll be a snowpack regardless."
Now, buried under 6 feet of snow at my home in one of the most intense Winters in SW Colorado history, and being outside every day on these mountains has made it very clear to me how astonishingly hard it is to climb or even hike these mountains.

Each step feels like 20. Each time you hit your ice pick against a mountain face, your whole body chatters.
I've gotten into ice climbing here a bit over the last couple years, specifically a place where there's a couple 300 foot waterfalls. But actually climbing these mountains in the Winter are an insane premise.

Stupid prize indeed, and most likely are dead. I now wonder why it was necessary for them to attempt this climb. Of course it has the appeal of being a breakthrough in climbing and being remembered, but the odds were stacked against them in just about every way imaginable.

I didn't even know this thread had been updated -- chief was on it.

I just now saw the news and was coming to post this very thing. Crazy, man. I mean it's not a surprise at all obviously, but just considering how these very dudes' winter attempt on Nanga Parbat was mentioned here, and now to see that they have almost certainly met their ends on the mountain...whoa.

I had been trying to keep up, looking for updates every few days or so on their attempt. I guess more than a week or so went by and I decided to look today and was stunned to see that they've been missing since the 24th of Feb.

They're still looking but there's no way they're alive. It's been what, 9 days?

Not that it matters at this point, but I wonder how they died.

Avalanche probably? They could've been roped together and fell into a crevasse. Or down the mountain off a steep edge. I doubt that they died from exposure from getting lost because that one dude Daniel Nardi was a very accomplished climber who had been on Nanga many times.

I doubt they fell and that's why ur roped together anyway. There saying camp 3 is at little less than 6000m with if that's where they were its alot better than being caught anywhere higher. Being a skilled climber or fit doesnt mean shit when your snowblind hypoxic and hypothermic.

makes perfect sense to me. ive never even felt the need to articulate why before. i assumed most peoppe just got it. why would somebody learn a dangerous skateboard trick?

i geuss if i had to try to explain it, People want to overcome difficult and risky things for a sense of meaning. the more difficult or risky the more meaningful. people who face things head on voluntarily are and always have been the people we admire.

why do you think we still talk about alexander the great but not other macedonian leaders before him so much?

why do you think we read about Noah who built an arch to survive a flood? why do you think gods first comand to Abraham was to leave his fathers house and his country out into the world where he experienced famine and all sorts of bad stuff. Joseph's whole thing was thriving in egypt and becoming well connected when he entered as a slave basically. Moses led the israelites through the desert for 40 years (chaos basically) to the promise land (order, home). the whole bible is full of people facing chaos head on. 

why do we read about bilbo baggins? he went on a long journey (to a mountain) and faced a dragon.

harry potter went into the chamber of secrets (again, chaos. the underworld for all intents and purposes) and faced the basilisk (a dragon for all intents and purposes) to save ginny.

every single superhero faces danger head on. we make tons of movies about them.

why do you think people were willing to go on a long boat ride from europe accross an ocean to an untamed continent then kill eachother over it in order to make it their home?

its the call to advanture man. facing chaotic environments voluntarily is admirable and meaningful. and it makes sense for evolutionary reasons. men who do that are who human females select as partners.

My question isn't why people climb mountains. If fact I would like to climb a mountain one day. My question is...why would you want to climb a mountain in the most treacherous conditions possible. Because I always thought the art of mountain climbing was to, en route to the summit -- be smart, calculated, efficient, and first & foremost...safe.

Climbing in winter in the Himalayas kinda throws the whole smart thing out the window.

And I've seen that documentary. I actually saw it tripping. Some beautiful shots but the narrator (Willem Defoe) ruined it for me lol dude was atrocious, idk what it was but I couldn't stand listening to him.

Yeah it looks like an avalanche got them. A really, really big fucking avalanche.

well thats something that nobody will survive. however you can successfully climb a mountain.

the goal is not killing yourself. its doing something hard and risky without killing yourself. the goal is making it through.

its the same reason somebody learns to do a flip. they dont just dive into the ground head first because they want to break their neck. they want to do a cool trick without breaking their neck.
