Re: Why would anybody attempt to climb one of the most dangerous mountains on earth in winter? [Re: Nifflerz] * 1

That's some craziness.

We ice climb here in the Winter, and that's perilous enough compared to regular mountain climbing (free or anchored).

With that said, most South/SouthEast facing lines on most mountains in this world that are free from snow at all times and climbable with a little more concentration.

I mean, if you're going above 13-14k' there's gonna be snow anywhere you go any time of the year. I don't think the Winter time makes those climbs harder at those altitudes. But if you're climbing from a base of like 8-9k that's flooded with snow. That's some dumb shit.

I applaud what they're doing. Risk vs reward in thrill seeking is very relatable to me in almost every aspect of my life.

Oh there's a difference, man. A huge one. Look at K2.

K2's summit has been reached a little over 300 times in recorded history. In winter? Not a human being in history has ever stood on that summit in winter. And they're trying every winter, too. Sending teams of the most elite climbers the world has to offer and they still haven't done it as of yet (I believe another team is on the mountain right now attempting it). Yes no matter the season, high altitude peaks are going to have snow and ice up there, but it's much, much more brutal and harsh in winter in the Himalayas on those peaks than in summer.

Google "K2 weather" real quick. As of this second it's 62 degrees below zero at base camp (if you google any mountain and the weather on it you're getting the temp reading from base camp). Minus 62 at the foot of the mountain. I can't even fathom what it would be half way up or further on that thing right now. And then add in hurricane force winds and the Himalayas in winter are as inhospitable of a place as there is on the entire planet.

Everest has been climbed nearly 8,000 times in history

In winter? 15 have reached the top. Total.

Yep, this is what I thought, more teams trying to scale both Nanga Parbat and K2 right now as we speak. They made it to camp 3 on Nanga Parbat but had to descend to base camp because of "deteriorating weather conditions". They're waiting it out right now hoping for better weather.

Meanwhile 2 other teams are en route to K2.

I can totally see the attraction.

Yall should read Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer. That always gets me into the mountaineering spirit. Its a shame I live in the flattest country on earth. Its name literally translates into "low land"

Yeah I need to finally get around to reading that. That's the one on the 1996 Everest disaster, right? If I recall correctly 8 climbers died in a 2 day period that year

I've been watching this documentary (the whole thing is on youtube) on the 2008 K2 disaster where 11 climbers died in 24 hours. They summited very, very late (in the evening, which is considered a major no no) and a huge piece of an ice serac the size of an office building started to release huge chunks of it -- the ice falling swept away all the fixed ropes and the climbers were forced to descend in the pitch black of night with no ropes on one of the steepest, scariest mountains on earth.

And...well obviously things didn't end in a happy story.

Have you ever climbed a mountain at night? It’s pretty cool. The object is to summit st sunrise.

Yeah you're supposed to head out super early, 3 AM or so and aim for either a sunrise summit if possible or by latest 2 PM-ish (I'm talking more along the lines of the Himalayan giants) that way you can descend in the sunlight and be back in the next camp in time to sleep.

Now I'm just an armchair climber lol, I've only summited a small Texas mountain (7,000-ish feet), so I have no personal experience obviously, but I've read a ton of stuff on Himalayan climbing and the golden rule is to NEVER be descending in the dark of night. Particularly on a killer like K2.

Reinhold Messner, who is like the Michael Jordan of mountaineering, said that the K2 climbers of the 08' disaster were victims "of pure stupidity" for summiting in the evening.

Reason being, they summit late, a disaster strikes (which they couldn't control of course), and then all of a sudden they're in a panic because you don't want to spend a night in the death zone because you're literally dying slowly (of fastly depending on who you are) in the death zone, so then they panicked and wanted to get out of the death zone at night. So now you're descending this in darkness

That's the peak of K2. 9 of the 11 deaths that occurred during those 24 hours happened at night.

Wow

It's incredibly difficult and extremely treacherous enough just getting to the summit of K2...but to ski down it too...amazing.

That super narrow and steep ridge with death looming on both sides that starts at 2:55 -- shit got me like

The story of Marco Siffredi: A French snowboarder who attempted to become the 1st to descend Everest by snowboard via the Hornbein Couloir route. Let's just say it's very, very steep.

He reached the summit and started his snowboard descent...and was never seen again. Body never found. This happened in 2002. He was 23.
