Why would anybody attempt to climb one of the most dangerous mountains on earth in winter? * 2
    #25719774 -

Why would people want to climb some of the already most dangerous mountains on earth in the Himalayas -- and dramatically increase their likelihood of dying by attempting these peaks in winter? I was just reading a story from earlier this year where a French female climber and her partner attempted Nanga Parbat, which is just about on every top 5 list for most dangerous mountains on earth (and that's in the normal climbing season where conditions are considered "optimal"), and they attempted it in winter where temps drop near minus 50 on the mountain with gale force winds that will literally blow you off it to your death. Well, to nobody's surprise, her partner died up there and she had to be rescued by a couple of the best mountaineers in the world, or else she'd still be up there today as a frozen corpse (her partner's body is still up there, and this happened like a year ago).

Why do it? And I don't mean why do people climb mountains. I get that part. Climbers are naturally drawn to summits. But why attempt something like that in winter? Isn't the point to just reach the summit? Isn't trying something like that in winter like saying...I want to go into the most dangerous neighborhood in the US, and do it at midnight just to increase the chances I may get robbed and/or killed.

Also saw where an elite team of climbers tried K2 in winter this past year and called it off after being out there at the base of the mountain for like over a month. The weather was too deadly. Again, K2 in the best of weather poses like a notorious 25% death rate for those who try it. And they wanna try that shit in winter? Google "K2 weather". It's like literally minus 57 at the base of the mountain. Seriously look it up. Can you imagine what the fucking peak is like? K2 to this day has still never been summited in winter in recorded human history by the way.

Here's the links to the two stories I referenced (both of which happened in 18').

And if you wanna brief glimpse into the hell that climbers go through by climbing in the himalayas in winter, check out this short video by this American climber. He's the 1st American climber to ever summit an 8,000 plus meter mountain in winter and he was on "only" (I say the world "only" jokingly btw) the 13th highest peak in the world, and it looks like sheer hell.

That mountain was Gasherbrum 2 for the record.

Well a good person would climb it as a personal accomplishment and a shitty person would do it to bolster their ego and brag about it for the rest of their lives.

Pro tip: the ONLY person you should EVER compete with is yourself. Comparison is the thief of happiness.

Well at least a venture like that would be enormously beneficial to science. So a death (or deaths) wouldn't go in vain.

These two French climbers who attempted Nanga Parbat wouldn't have even had the bragging rights of first mountaineers to scale it in winter, because a pair of other climbers did that like a few years ago. So their claim to fame would be, "we were the second pair of climbers to reach the peak of this particular mountain in winter!"

:speechless:

Well the dude who ultimately died on the mountain, apparently was obsessed with climbing it first in winter, got beat to it by another pair of climbers, claimed the other pair of climbers lied, still wanted to do it anyway (it was like his 8th attempt on that same mountain in winter), and the mountain finally got him. He reached the summit, got deathly sick right beneath the peak and couldn't move anymore. And froze to death.

Amazingly Elisabeth Revol somehow survived, thanks to a couple of elite mountain climbers who were flown from K2 to Nanga Parbat for the rescue, and she may or may not have her toes and fingers today.

This was them:

It's the achievement of survival and accomplishment, pushing that boundary just that one step further.

I've tuna fished in deep rough ocean, jumped off mountains with a parachute, hiked into caves for days... many more nuts things. It's that feeling of being alive against all odds. Admittedly I never did any real stupid shit as above, everything I've done has been done before, but I get the trip.

Dying on a mountain climb is exactly how most mountain climbers want to die.  By increasing the odds to make it happen with dangerous climbs, success ramps up the epicness ov their life journey and death fulfills their ultimate desire.

The peak rising above the clouds

Rated the second most dangerous mountain on earth in this list, right behind Annapurna.

It has a 22% death rate (deaths to summits ratio). 31 climbers died attempting to reach its summit before it was first successfully climbed in the 50's. As of today there has been 82 recorded deaths on the mountain.

This is considered the deadliest mountain on earth statistically. Annapurna. As far as successful summits to fatalities ratio. 191 successful ascents in history, 61 fatalities. 35% death ratio.

I'm going to see Annapurna one day in person. One of the best hiking treks (supposedly) on earth is a 14 to 20 day trek in Nepal called the Annapurna circuit. Takes you through a portion of the Himalayas along a route through villages where it's like going back in time. Ultimately it leads you up to the base camp of Annapurna, the most death defying climb arguably on this earth.

It's on my bucket list to see that beast.

I tend to disagree.  I'm not up for either, but look at all the people who are so eager to sign up for Mars colonization.  It's in the human spirit.  People have always just set off for places, and I think that glory is usually what they are seeking on some level, but I think that the type of glory some people require is way off the charts in terms of what sex offers.  It's a raw drive, just like sex, but I don't think they are one in the same, I think it is more of a parallel drive.

I don't really understand the extremes that the French Climbers took it.

Winter mountaineering is great for a lot of reasons though.

Self reliance is scaled up ten-fold. There's so much more solitude in the Winter.

When you get in deep and you know there's a thin thread connecting you with life; that's an awesome feeling.

I just finished an avalance course so I can start traveling more safely in the backcountry.
Gaining and maintaining these skills is a never ending process.

For sure, but also a lot of it is just for sake of pure competition.

With mountain climbing for example, it's who can reach the summit first. Then when that's done it's who can do the most difficult route (this is perplexing to me because when it comes to nature aren't we taught to do the safest thing, doing the most dangerous and treacherous thing just for bragging rights seems awfully stupid to me). Then when that feat is conquered it's who can do the most dangerous route in the most dangerous season (winter obviously). With rock climbing something like El Capitan, it's who can scale it first, then who can do it the fastest, and ultimately they're at a point with it where it's who can it in the most dangerous fashion.

Person 1: "I climbed El Capitan!"

Person 2: "So, I climbed it faster than you."

Person 3: "Yeah well I climbed it faster than both of you but in winter."

Person 4: "LOLZ I climbed it faster than all 3 of you in winter and with no ropes."

Those French climbers were actually (as of a couple years ago) in a competition with another team to become the first climbers ever to summit Nanga Parbat in winter. The guy who died up there was supposedly obsessed about it. Like it was literally his 7th attempt or some shit like that in winter.

Egos, man.

That's some craziness.

We ice climb here in the Winter, and that's perilous enough compared to regular mountain climbing (free or anchored).

With that said, most South/SouthEast facing lines on most mountains in this world that are free from snow at all times and climbable with a little more concentration.

I mean, if you're going above 13-14k' there's gonna be snow anywhere you go any time of the year. I don't think the Winter time makes those climbs harder at those altitudes. But if you're climbing from a base of like 8-9k that's flooded with snow. That's some dumb shit.

I applaud what they're doing. Risk vs reward in thrill seeking is very relatable to me in almost every aspect of my life.

Oh there's a difference, man. A huge one. Look at K2.

K2's summit has been reached a little over 300 times in recorded history. In winter? Not a human being in history has ever stood on that summit in winter. And they're trying every winter, too. Sending teams of the most elite climbers the world has to offer and they still haven't done it as of yet (I believe another team is on the mountain right now attempting it). Yes no matter the season, high altitude peaks are going to have snow and ice up there, but it's much, much more brutal and harsh in winter in the Himalayas on those peaks than in summer.

Google "K2 weather" real quick. As of this second it's 62 degrees below zero at base camp (if you google any mountain and the weather on it you're getting the temp reading from base camp). Minus 62 at the foot of the mountain. I can't even fathom what it would be half way up or further on that thing right now. And then add in hurricane force winds and the Himalayas in winter are as inhospitable of a place as there is on the entire planet.

Yep, this is what I thought, more teams trying to scale both Nanga Parbat and K2 right now as we speak. They made it to camp 3 on Nanga Parbat but had to descend to base camp because of "deteriorating weather conditions". They're waiting it out right now hoping for better weather.

Meanwhile 2 other teams are en route to K2.

I've been watching this documentary (the whole thing is on youtube) on the 2008 K2 disaster where 11 climbers died in 24 hours. They summited very, very late (in the evening, which is considered a major no no) and a huge piece of an ice serac the size of an office building started to release huge chunks of it -- the ice falling swept away all the fixed ropes and the climbers were forced to descend in the pitch black of night with no ropes on one of the steepest, scariest mountains on earth.

And...well obviously things didn't end in a happy story.

Yeah you're supposed to head out super early, 3 AM or so and aim for either a sunrise summit if possible or by latest 2 PM-ish (I'm talking more along the lines of the Himalayan giants) that way you can descend in the sunlight and be back in the next camp in time to sleep.

Now I'm just an armchair climber lol, I've only summited a small Texas mountain (7,000-ish feet), so I have no personal experience obviously, but I've read a ton of stuff on Himalayan climbing and the golden rule is to NEVER be descending in the dark of night. Particularly on a killer like K2.

Reinhold Messner, who is like the Michael Jordan of mountaineering, said that the K2 climbers of the 08' disaster were victims "of pure stupidity" for summiting in the evening.

Reason being, they summit late, a disaster strikes (which they couldn't control of course), and then all of a sudden they're in a panic because you don't want to spend a night in the death zone because you're literally dying slowly (of fastly depending on who you are) in the death zone, so then they panicked and wanted to get out of the death zone at night. So now you're descending this in darkness

That's the peak of K2. 9 of the 11 deaths that occurred during those 24 hours happened at night.

This is Mount Washington in New Hampshire.

Looks harmless. Looks like a hill compared to even the 14,000 footers in the Rockies. I was shocked to learn that since 1849 there have been 137 fatalities. Supposedly several weather patterns collide there which produces some really, really bad weather systems. The highest wind velocity ever recorded at any weather station was recorded on Mount Washington. 231 MPH. And it's very innocent looks attract unprepared hikers. The majority of the fatalities were reportedly hypothermia.

I climbed that when I went to summer camp in New Hampshire when I was 12. We climbed a mountain a week that summer. My glutes were tight AF. Mt Washington seemed easier than other hikes that summer. We did the entire ascent and decent in a day. Other ascents required camping.

I’m not terribly impressed with the Rockies 14,000 footers considering you start at 9,000. I’m impressed with people who climb the volcanos in the PNW. Those are truly 14,000 foot ascents.

I hated camp at the time but we did a lot of cool shit. We canoed from little squam lake, across big squam, portaged a few miles to lake winnipesauke and then traversed the entire length of that lake. We camped out on little islands coverd with blueberries. I wish I had appreciated it at the time.

I think I understand why so many people died on k2 that time
first off it snowed for 2 weeks before they had a chance to go
so the first day they went was the day the sun was out
the sun was just blasting the mountain with u.v. rays all day because it's so high up
as night came it didn't really get cooler
the heat from the day was still sticking around
and that's why their were so many avalanches, the temp really doesn't get it's lowest until like 4am 5am in the mourning

This article posted a day ago.

https://explorersweb.com/2019/01/21/winter-8000ers-off-they-go/

Winter attempts are being made right now -- expeditions on K2, Nanga Parbat, and Manaslu.

K2 28,251 feet.
Manaslu 26,781 feet.
Nanga Parbat 26,660 feet.

Right now the temps at base camp of all three (as of this second)

K2 51 degrees below zero.
Manaslu 23 degrees below zero.
Nanga Parbat 47 degrees below zero.

K2 has never been summited in winter. Nanga I think just once by a two man team in 2016. I don't know about Manaslu.

Can K2 finally be conquered in winter? I doubt it. Who knows though. As of roughly 24 hours ago they were between camp 1 and 2.

They got a long ass way to go.

Txikon is delighted with the igloos he built. “I’ve had the best night in a winter camp ever,” he said, adding that the snow houses are warmer, more wind-resistant and more silent than tents. Although they are in Pakistan, the team, which includes five Nepali climbers, performed a traditional Buddhist ceremony last weekend. Waldemar Kowalewski of Poland has joined their expedition.

Meanwhile, Vassily Pivtsov and some of his members are back in Advanced Base Camp after a first push well above Camp 1 towards Camp 2 and a rough night in strong winds. “Yesterday we didn’t descend, because were sure that the wind wouldn’t be so strong at 6,000m,” the expedition team has just reported. “Today, we fixed ropes up to 6,300m.”

Manaslu

“After overnighting at 6,000m, we have moved forward to Camp 2 at 6,400m,” Simone Moro wrote earlier today. He and Geljen Sherpa struggled to find a route through huge crevasses and seracs, until they reached a point where ladders are required — something they don’t have and are not part of their alpine-style ascent. Instead, they need to find an alternative route, after waiting out some upcoming bad weather in Advanced Base Camp.

Nanga Parbat

Daniele Nardi’s team are back in BC after leaving a cache at 6,200m, slightly above Camp 3, last week. About the hard conditions, Tom Ballard shrugged: “What did you expect? It is winter on the ninth highest peak in the world. No picnic.”

https://explorersweb.com/2019/01/31/winter-8000er-update-despair-on-nanga-parbat-k2-climbers-still-hopeful/

The winter attempt 26,759 ft high Manaslu has been called off. The team on 26,660 ft Nanga Parbat is on its way to being called off as well because a ton of the team's resources got buried in snow (from an avalanche it appears). Tents, gear, sleeping bags, fuel, food, and equipment. They stashed it there on camp 3, went back down to camp 2 (good call) because of avalanche risk, returned and it was all gone.

Only the 2 teams on K2 still remain. The temp at basecamp of K2 is currently at 56 below zero.

I guess the latest update is fucking britsh and italian ambassadors had to go to the fucking embassy in Pakistan to get them to allow a helicopter to be flown in the area near the moutain after they just shot down two indian plane like yesterday or some shit. but it was to late in the day to attempt rescue so they're gonna do it tomorrow. Still no sign or movement or radio/satellite contact. What a shitshow with the helicopter. :nonono:

helicopters had to stand down due to weather after trying several attempts. They are standing by in Pakistan but weather is supposed to get worse in the afternoon. Theres a russian team that's acclimated and "not afraid of bad weather." the team on k2 is also standing by to attempt rescue but are unable to because of the approaching weather. So basically doesnt look good for dewds and still no contact/sign of life.

I like that saying.

When this thread first came up, I was like "oh, it's cool..doesn't matter if it's Winter or Summer, because there'll be a snowpack regardless."
Now, buried under 6 feet of snow at my home in one of the most intense Winters in SW Colorado history, and being outside every day on these mountains has made it very clear to me how astonishingly hard it is to climb or even hike these mountains.

Each step feels like 20. Each time you hit your ice pick against a mountain face, your whole body chatters.
I've gotten into ice climbing here a bit over the last couple years, specifically a place where there's a couple 300 foot waterfalls. But actually climbing these mountains in the Winter are an insane premise.

Stupid prize indeed, and most likely are dead. I now wonder why it was necessary for them to attempt this climb. Of course it has the appeal of being a breakthrough in climbing and being remembered, but the odds were stacked against them in just about every way imaginable.

I didn't even know this thread had been updated -- chief was on it.

I just now saw the news and was coming to post this very thing. Crazy, man. I mean it's not a surprise at all obviously, but just considering how these very dudes' winter attempt on Nanga Parbat was mentioned here, and now to see that they have almost certainly met their ends on the mountain...whoa.

I had been trying to keep up, looking for updates every few days or so on their attempt. I guess more than a week or so went by and I decided to look today and was stunned to see that they've been missing since the 24th of Feb.

They're still looking but there's no way they're alive. It's been what, 9 days?

Not that it matters at this point, but I wonder how they died.

Avalanche probably? They could've been roped together and fell into a crevasse. Or down the mountain off a steep edge. I doubt that they died from exposure from getting lost because that one dude Daniel Nardi was a very accomplished climber who had been on Nanga many times.

I doubt they fell and that's why ur roped together anyway. There saying camp 3 is at little less than 6000m with if that's where they were its alot better than being caught anywhere higher. Being a skilled climber or fit doesnt mean shit when your snowblind hypoxic and hypothermic.

makes perfect sense to me. ive never even felt the need to articulate why before. i assumed most peoppe just got it. why would somebody learn a dangerous skateboard trick?

i geuss if i had to try to explain it, People want to overcome difficult and risky things for a sense of meaning. the more difficult or risky the more meaningful. people who face things head on voluntarily are and always have been the people we admire.

why do you think we still talk about alexander the great but not other macedonian leaders before him so much?

why do you think we read about Noah who built an arch to survive a flood? why do you think gods first comand to Abraham was to leave his fathers house and his country out into the world where he experienced famine and all sorts of bad stuff. Joseph's whole thing was thriving in egypt and becoming well connected when he entered as a slave basically. Moses led the israelites through the desert for 40 years (chaos basically) to the promise land (order, home). the whole bible is full of people facing chaos head on.

why do we read about bilbo baggins? he went on a long journey (to a mountain) and faced a dragon.

harry potter went into the chamber of secrets (again, chaos. the underworld for all intents and purposes) and faced the basilisk (a dragon for all intents and purposes) to save ginny.

every single superhero faces danger head on. we make tons of movies about them.

why do you think people were willing to go on a long boat ride from europe accross an ocean to an untamed continent then kill eachother over it in order to make it their home?

its the call to advanture man. facing chaotic environments voluntarily is admirable and meaningful. and it makes sense for evolutionary reasons. men who do that are who human females select as partners.

My question isn't why people climb mountains. If fact I would like to climb a mountain one day. My question is...why would you want to climb a mountain in the most treacherous conditions possible. Because I always thought the art of mountain climbing was to, en route to the summit -- be smart, calculated, efficient, and first & foremost...safe.

Climbing in winter in the Himalayas kinda throws the whole smart thing out the window.

And I've seen that documentary. I actually saw it tripping. Some beautiful shots but the narrator (Willem Defoe) ruined it for me lol dude was atrocious, idk what it was but I couldn't stand listening to him.

well thats something that nobody will survive. however you can successfully climb a mountain.

the goal is not killing yourself. its doing something hard and risky without killing yourself. the goal is making it through.

its the same reason somebody learns to do a flip. they dont just dive into the ground head first because they want to break their neck. they want to do a cool trick without breaking their neck.

you wouldnt give it a go which means its not worth doing or respecting?

that percentage is 100%. anything less than 100% is a chance not a certainty. if you pass a test that you felt good about does that have the same feeling as passing a test you thought you were going to fail? beating the odds is exciting.

adventure is what makes humans different. was it stupid to leave africa and thrive in all sorts of different climates and environments including total opposites? was it stupid to put a man on the moon? im sure there is a way higher chance of dying on a moon mission than while climbing most mountains. was it stupid for the first americans to fight off the largest empire in human history to create the freest country in history?

people tell stories about people who faced danger head on and succeeded. the first story ever written is a hero story. the epic of gilgamesh. thats what makes people people. we are hungry for adventure.

we admire and revere heros. the ones who face danger head on.

you can say you dont get it. but i bet when you watch movies or read books about heros who take chances and dont back down you are gripped by the story. if you have ever enjoyed a movie or book centered around a protagonist who overcomes difficulty then on some level you understand.

like half the dwarves die in the hobbit. thats a 50% chance of dying yet people still love that story decades after it was written.

Yeah no that's just luck and natural selection
No will power involved in any of that

If there is some dangerous activity you could point out where people survive no matter the situation that would be interesting, but in those circumstances I feel they are differentiating themselves from 99% of people, so 99% of people wouldn't even be allowed to try it in the first place.

your posts are really degenerating into nonsense.

what is just luck and natural selection? there is no willpower involved in what?

if people survive no matter what its not dangerous. why is that interesting?

99% of people wouldnt be allowed to try what? who is the one deciding who is allowed?

my point is all people have the call to adventure. some want to climb mountains, some want to camp in the wilderness, some people want to scubadive, some peope want to be astronauts. but we all experience the call to advanture to some degree.

I mean...I get it, I do. To an extent anyway. Honestly what this (climbing in winter, or climbing a new route on a mountain that is more death defying than the previous) boils down to is bragging rights. Competition.

It used to be:

Climb a mountain via the smartest & safest route. To get to the summit. To set foot somewhere where either very few humans have, or in some cases, no humans at all.

But now that all the highest peaks in the world have been reached -- now it's I wanna go in a more dangerous season than the previous climber. And if that's been done in winter, then now it's I'm going to go via a much more insane route with a higher chance of death.

Nanga Parbat, in winter, has been reached. Only once. But yeah it's been done. So what did Nardi & Ballard want to do (the 2 climbers who just perished there)? They wanted to go an even more insane route than the two dudes who reached it in winter in 2016.

Here's what Simone Moro (one of the climbers who reached in winter in 2016; the first to ever reach the summit of Nanga Parbat in winter) had to say about what just happened:

Quote:
“Every day the spur sees avalanches or falling ice chunks like cars, which explode on impact,” Mr Moro recalled.

“This year Nardi would have been the first to make the ascent via the spur, and it would have been the first historic climb of his career, but it was madness. If we continue to say they were just unlucky, the risk is someone will die there next year,” he added.

They were attempting a route along what is known as the "Mummery Spur". Moro also said it was "suicidal".

https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/partner-of-lost-climber-tom-ballard-was-obsessed-with-killer-mountain-mtmzkflhr?shareToken=a6769151e9c61b9ebfe34799afa78b26

When a guy who has enough screws loose to attempt Nanga in winter like Moro (and I say that in the most endearing way possible), and even he's saying it's "madness" and "suicidal"...that's saying a lot.

People have survived jumping from airplanes with no parachutes, why couldn't I survive that? If I can get the horse to land in a tree, or jump off it at the last second then land in a tree, I'm sure I could survive.

The physical difference between hitting something with feet of 'give' - even if its pretty nasty like a big bush or a tree, or even water is survivable at terminal atmospheric velocity for humans - is a massive difference than landing on any sort of land.. Only snow or swamp more or less - other than bushes/trees/water is survivable. And as I'm sure anyone is aware, water is not optimal and would require an extremely precise landing to even have a chance of just walking away with a few broken bones

well thats something that nobody will survive. however you can successfully climb a mountain.

the goal is not killing yourself. its doing something hard and risky without killing yourself. the goal is making it through.

its the same reason somebody learns to do a flip. they dont just dive into the ground head first because they want to break their neck. they want to do a cool trick without breaking their neck.

People have survived jumping from airplanes with no parachutes, why couldn't I survive that? If I can get the horse to land in a tree, or jump off it at the last second then land in a tree, I'm sure I could survive.

well why dont you go and do it because you are acting like an autistic 12 year old who just wants to poke holes in everything people say to feel smart. you even do it in the funnies thread.

whats next is music just a pointless sequence of sounds that you are too smart for? :nerd:

incase anybody didnt catch on i was joking. i dont want you to jump off a building on a horse. i dont think that would be wise. do not try this at home

Can you find an example of som one who actually fell from an airplane without a parachute or some other assistance. I went through that entire list and none of them qualify for an actual free fall.

Quote:
A skydiver from Staffordshire plunged 6,000 ft without a parachute in Russia and survived to tell the tale. Hitting rocks at an estimate 100 kilometers per hour, miracle man 31-year-old James Boole, from Tamworth, was filming a TV documentary in Russia when his parachute launched only seconds to the groun

Like this dude ^ he had a parachute it just opened late.

You’re the one making silly claims. I shouldn’t have to go digging through the Internet looking for actual examples especially when from what I can see they’re all bullshit.

I guess you're just not very good at it  No hard feelings, it's fun to research!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vesna_Vulovi - no parachute, 33,333ft (?) - was already wounded by a bomb
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicholas_Alkemade - 18,000 no parachute
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivan_Chisov - 23,000 feet, passed out before he could open his chute
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_Magee ; - had already been injured by numerous shrapnel wounds, passed out from the altitude, then fell through a glass roof from 22,000 - no parachute
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juliane_Koepcke - Seat potentially saved her? 10,000ft - fell over Amazon, no parachute mother apparently survived plane breakup but died before being found(?)

There are other shorter falls recorded (say 400ft) which is still enough to surpass 100mph.

But yeah - of course, it requires a huge degree of luck, maybe a bit of skillful maneuvering, and the right landing environment (namely snow/trees/bushes/buildings with give (i.e. the glass roof), and sometimes water has worked)

And fyi living such a fall with a tangled parachute is still extremely significant (as is the case in many other situations) , as the airforce generally rates a 'streamer' - or wrapped improperly deployed parachute as reducing speed by only 10% - however simultaneously it will often prevent someone from getting into a proper sky-diving stance (which generally lowers fall speed to about 125mph-100mph) - hard to say exactly how fast you'd be going with such a minor reduction, but living a fall in which your velocity is well above 80-90mph is significant - and the accepted highly lethal (super-rapid) deceleration value is 55mph.

Why would people want to climb some of the already most dangerous mountains on earth in the Himalayas -- and dramatically increase their likelihood of dying by attempting these peaks in winter?

I don't know about this polish guy, but there is a lot to be said for winter mountaineering, especially when you ski/snowboard down. Descents that would take hours can be done in minutes, and are truly incredible. Just look at what people like Xavier De Le Rue and Jeremy Jones do for fun.

I think most aplinists aren't drawn to the mountains to inflate their egos. It is not about conquering the mountain, but communing with it. It is about pushing your limits, stepping outside of your comfort zone. Kind of like taking psychedelic drugs. Does it achieve anything? Does it matter? Depends on who you ask. Mountaineering is like a beautiful dance, a wild and dangerous form of art. Even stone statues will crumble, do they matter once they're gone?

In Hinduism there is a story of a prince who finds himself on the brink of battle. His father had recently died and his uncle was trying to steal the throne. The prince did not want to fight this battle. He was young and feared death, and to succeed would mean to kill many of his own family he had known and loved his whole life. He prayed to Krishna who told him that he must fight, but not for his ego to prove he is the better fighter, or for his desire to sit upon the throne. He must fight because it is his destiny. He is a warrior, and has trained his entire life for this moment. To kill or die in battle would be far better than running and never realizing his full potential, his purpose.

Buddhists spend days making incredibly intricate designs out of colored sand. When they are done they blow the sand into the wind. Everything is fleeting.

Seems to me that most of these people would rather die in the mountains, than live a life without them. Like how so many people risk their freedom, their jobs, and in some places their lives, just to get high.

When I used to live in a city I would go to dangerous neighborhoods late at night because the best fried chicken joint was there. It was more dangerous than ordering dominoes, but I wasn't going to live my life in fear. So I got high and ate fried chicken. That was the best chicken I've ever had.

Becaons, I'm assuming.

We've had over 20 skiers/snowboarders get swallowed by avalanches here over the last month. 4 died, 16 were rescued.

GPS beacons and backpack avalanche airbags have made it a lot safer. Although death is quite inevitable when you can't move for days, can't use the snow as water, etc.
Although it's good to keep in mind this level of snowpack hasn't happened in the West in over 45 years.

Coming from a climber here, the solitude and adversity you face on big climbs brings a sense of joy and adventure that not much else really compares to. The Alpine environment especially so. Psychedelic experiences can do the same mentally and spiritually for me as well. Also just being out in nature and exerting and challenging yourself is extremely enjoyable and therapeutic.

Also “Free Climbing” still means climbing with a rope and protection, just not pulling on gear or Aid-Climbing, meaning simply using your hands and feet to climb while being protected by gear and rope if/when you fall. If you’re referring to the style in which Alex Honnold occasionally does large climbs like the route up El Cap he did for the film with zero protection, no harness, no rope, or anything that’s called “Free Soloing”. Sorry, I know most non-climbers prob don’t care about the distinction anyway.

I've only been climbing for a few years since I moved to the mountains, but it has become one of my favorite things in life.

The lovely people that introduced me to that world are all free climbers, and well, doing this now for a while has greatly humbled me.
The mountains here in the Southern Rockies are the most beautiful I've seen through 3 continents and climbing them is truly an honor.

To be able to be one with them is special, therapeutic as you mentioned.

Free soloing though. That shit's crazy!

Speaking from experince.

I live at around 7,000 feet.

A crazy snow blizzard is happening.

I helped 3 other drivers clear a pile up with my bare hands by pushing every single vehicle up the hill.

This lasted about 15-20 minutes.

Then I had about a quarter mile walk to my house and it probably 1,000ft elevation rise.

Once I made it inside my body went into shock. I'm just now coming out of it. My lungs feel like I just took a big dab, irritated, & congested. This feeling was crazy scary.

I could not image what kind of shock your body will go into trying to fucking climb that thing.

We've gotten 26 inches at home (8,000) since 7pm last night from this same blizzard you're experiencing, but here in the SW corner.
At mountain pass level, some areas have recorded 75 inches since Monday!
Thankfully we don't have to contend with the wind as much here since the mountains surround me in a horseshoe shape, but the areas that are exposed...Holy shit. This is historic and 10 miles down the road to 6000 feet, there's not a speck of snow to be seen on the ground.

For Denver it's still quite a storm, but nothing that hasn't happened before. Maybe 2008 was one as strong as this one, but never one with such low pressure has been recorded. ever.

Good on you for helping those people. This Winter caught everyone off guard after not really having one last season. SO people got rusty at winter driving, as did I. I've had to be pulled out at least 5 times this season in my 2wd truck.
And have pulled out at least the same amount of people with my 4wd truck.. Just on my street.
A one mile stretch of road.

Every day on the way to work that there's a storm like this, and it's been 1-2 times a week in this area since Christmas, there'll be 10-20 cars in the snowbanks along those 50 miles of road.

Now it's time for avalanche season!

I read on reddit this type of storm has the word "bomb" in it.

It's where the biometric pressure drops like 20 or 30 in less than 24 hours.

The article said this bombblizzard or whatever the fuck they called it was the first time the phenomenon has happened in Colorado.

It was really like a bomb went off. Winds gust was insane in some neighborhoods.

Funny thing is in 2016 I got trapped in a snow storm in New Mexcio during a mental breakdown and it finally let me to thinking the snow was nuclear fallout from a atomic bomb set off by russia.

God knows how bad I would have reacted if the news was calling that storm back in 2016 a technical name with the word bomb in it. I would have completely lost it. I still had like 3% of my mind telling me I was tripping but the 97% had control plus the whole fucking Glutin issue and LSD 2 weeks prior, & my dad dying 2 months prior did not help my mental state of mind along with some other crazy shit.

Although the film was shot almost entirely in the studio at Elstree Studios in Hertfordshire, England, where the hotel interior was constructed, the exterior of the 'Overlook Hotel' is the Timberline Lodge, Mount Hood in the Hood River area of Northern Oregon.

The Stanley Hotel served as the inspiration for the Overlook Hotel in Stephen King's 1977 bestselling novel The Shining and as the filming location for the 1997 TV miniseries, also written by King. Today, the hotel features a restaurant, spa and bed-and-breakfast, and provides guided tours.

That's truly awesome.
The Stanley is one of the coolest historical hotels, and just buildings in general in the country I think.
That along with all the history of hauntings, ghosts, and original decor makes it just an experience it seems, rather than just staying at a hotel.

It's just awesome to think about all the little secrets about that place that only a few people in this world, including your dad only know.

I've yet to spend a night there, but I have it planned out for this Summer.

The only thing I hated about van life is parking overnight to sleep. That's it. 1 complaint & you can easy fix that by having a friend let you park on their property but I was new to the state.

The wind/temperatures never bothered me. If I got too cold I started the engine and turned on my two cabin heaters inside. Warm up, cover up, turn off vehicle, then go back to sleep.

Yea, it's rapid cyclogenesis where pressure drops suddenly. I'm not sure the exact parameters, but it's crazy how it literally looks like it just bombs out of the sky.
I love seeing that light/moderate snow all of a sudden burst away sideways and then the snowflakes just come in sheets. Not individual flakes any longer.
Last evening driving home, it was 35F with some light mixed precipitation. It was 7pm when it switched to all snow and my weather station was reading 1003 MB (a fairly normal day with usually a bit of rain or snow)
I woke this morning to it reading 982mb! That's the same potency as very strong tropical storm or even weak hurricane.
The lowest I had seen it drop here was Monsoon season of 2016 to 992mb. That dumped 3 inches of rain on us in 10 hours. The equivalent of 30-45 inches of snow depending on dendric growth (how cold it is aloft allowing snow to contain more air) had it happened in Winter.

As far as actual snowfall up there in NE CO, it doesn't look to be more than maybe a foot even at the highest elevations but again, that wind surge makes 3 inches of snow look like 6 feet fell and it's the end of the world. Especially in a metropolitan area like Denver.I'm just still in shock over the entire Winter. My home receives roughly 75 inches of snow a year on average, and only had 60" last year. We just hit 161" as of 30 minutes ago, with a few weeks left for a lot more snow.

Wolf Creek which is usually the snowiest livable area in the state, has already surpassed their record of 450 inches for the season by 23 inches as of this morning.

I'll post some pictures of the craziness here at my place in a bit.

Let it snow, motherfuckers!

I noticed it was a steady wind like a hurricane. I lived on the gulf coast for a few years and stayed for hurricane Bill back on 2003ish. I never did that again! There was a steady 40-75mph wind. Very scary and interesting at once. Saw a really cool water spout one time too, maybe a couple of times, but one was spectacular. It will probably melt by Sunday, lol.

Some pictures as promised:

My living room window. It's crazy to think that the snow on the bottom of this 7 foot bank is from back around Thanksgiving.

My trucks as I woke up this morning, before another 8 inches came in:

My driveway which no machine or man can escape from lol It's been plowed twice since 6 am, and I still can't get out without my neighbor towing me out in his lifted truck.

My backyard, or at least what's left of it. My little doghouse in the back no longer has a door.

For sure it'll melt by Sunday up in Denver. Always does.
Front Rangers rarely have to deal with snow on the ground for more than a week. People think that Denver and Colorado Springs get so much snowfall, but it's really rather low compared to places at similar latitudes out East.

These snowstorms can be spectacular there, but it's a 1-2 day event and life is completely back to normal. I've heard stories from people that lived there in the 80's and 90's, and some of those years, there were blizzard events where snow stuck the entire Winter.

Us Western Slopers have to deal with these storms every week for 4-5 months out of the year, and we don't see the ground until May but as I've mentioned, this storm is historic! Just the way it was set up and came into the Rockies. Not necessarily its effects although they're pretty crazy.

The worst of it is going to be, and already started in Nebraska up to the Dakotas. They'll be reaching strong tropical storm force winds for a couple hours, maybe even 3 or 4 hours but with 20 inches of snow along with it. 6-10 foot snowdrifts are something I've yet to see.
In the general sense, Front Range of Colorado was spared by comparison.

Good read here in the link on the two climbers who died.

Man Nardi was completely consumed and obsessed with Nanga Parbat.

I envy you right now, Koods.
As much as I love the snow, this Winter has been just been so incredibly long already. I've actually been missing Florida, and no one should ever miss Florida.
Thankfully driving an hour South into NM or AZ allows me to bask in some 70 degree air and sunshine.

Without that, I wouldn't enjoy living where I do.

I had a conversation recently with my partner about possibly moving back, and my words were "the only way I'd happily do that is if I were to go to St. Pete."

Just something special about that town that I could never really put my finger on.

I was there 1.5 years, 05-06. My rent was 650 and I lived a 15 min bike ride (coasting there) from the beach. St Pete beach. I also worked at the St Pete Yacht club. It was then that I knew I had to do something else besides the service industry, but that's another story. The Dali museum was fucking awesome!

The Dali museum was the last place I stopped at before driving out of FL for good.
Indeed an awesome place.
My memories from there are all great. Everything from the wildness of Gasparilla to Haslem's, the oldest used book store in the country.
The food there was amazing. I mean, I lived in Miami and had more options but St. Pete has charm.
Even the way the buildings are constructed around downtown make it for a nicer city than most, if not all in FL.
I never lived there though. A few of my very close friends moved there in their early-mid 20's, and I would go up for a week or two at a time.

Until that point, I had no interest in living there as it was all just Tampa to me.

3 more elite climbers meet their ends on the mountain.

These 3 were sponsored by Northface.

An avalanche on a mountain in Canada.

These are the same guys attempting Annapurna a few years back.

That picture of sooo many people on the top crest is sad to see for so many reasons.
What do they think they're doing????  Lot of them aren't too bright in the head.
