I see there are centers offering Vipassana in Germany:
https://www.google.com/#q=vipassana+meditation+center+germany
Will you go that route? Or some other way.

Yes, but you will need instruction. The best way is to go on a retreat that accepts beginners. Whether or not you decide to do that, I highly recommend the book Mindfulness in Plain English. It's one of the most straight-up rundowns of what you need to know to practice vipassana.

As for what a retreat is like, obviously everyone has a different experience. If meditation is totally new to you, it might be weird or frustrating at first, but you'll definitely make some progress throughout the course of the retreat. Just living in silence for that long will leave your mind much less noisy, even if you the practice itself doesn't click with you right away.

Essentially you'll be switching between sitting and walking meditation pretty much all day, with a dharma talk or two, and breaks to eat meals in silence. It's a really supportive and calm environment. At some point there will be interviews with the teacher to discuss how you're doing with the practice, which is super helpful. However it goes, you will almost certainly have gained some perspective on your life by the time it's over.

I practice Vipassana. Unsure of your experience, but I wouldn't recommend a multi-day
retreat until you get used to regularly sitting in silence for 30-60 minutes at a time.

Mindfulness meditation isn't about "seeing" reality as much as learning about the reactive mind.
To observe how our chattering monkey-mind spins stories and judgments helps us to understand the
relationship between our thoughts and emotions. We can learn to put space between ourselves
and our thoughts and emotions so they don't rule our lives.

Best wishes. Report back!

I highly recommend doing a 10 day Goenka Vipassana retreat. A great foundation for meditation and living well.

you and rj tubbs sound like you gained powerful insights from the retreats... I just had my first 10 day beginners retreat last week and will be serving a 3 day course in a couple of hours... I wonder if the OP went to the retreat.

I pay homage and respects to the Awakened ones in the past, present and future for their undying compassion, sympathy, that every living being may learn from their findings...

Kudos, but I'm a meditator, nor a masochist.

Sarva Mangalam.

Yes, Vipassana is good breath meditation; but it doesn't need a label really. Pranayam is something you should look up.

I appreciate the sentiment, but meditation has nothing to do with being a beginner or experienced

Part of meditation is observing how determined mind is to place itself on the hierarchy ladder.

If we spend thousands of hours meditating, it's still wise to avoid the temptation of feeling skilled.
