Side Pin Tips

Hey Yall,

Just seeing if I could get some tips on getting a massive amount of sidepins.

The search results are mostly on how to avoid them.

In my reading most people see them as bad but why? Side pins are so easy that they pop without trying and even pop when people try to avoid them. So if side pinning is so easy then why not use it to our advantage?

Sorry if this has been brought up but if it has can you link me to a Side Pin Tek?

Side pins means you're doing it wrong. It's actually easier to keep good conditions and get canopies IMO. :shrug:

Yes side pins can still be salvaged, but wouldn't you rather grow a killer pin set to a killer canopy of shroomage?

I think there’s an argument to be made that side pins are easier and could produce equally as well.

I’m just going to be doing science is all. May or may not work but isn’t it worth finding out?

How are side pins easier?  I don't buy that.

To prevent side pins make sure you introduce more FAE earlier on.  It's just a matter of timing.  If you choke the substrate of fresh air for too long it will not know where the surface is and will put out side pins.  Also don't let the surface dry out or it won't pin on the surface either. Generally I wait only about a week or until casing layer is 75% colonized before giving FAE.

Why would you go against everyone recommendations and try to get side pins?
If you like them Im cool with that. But it just seems silly to me too try and get as many as possible because you think it could out preform and preform as well?

If it did people would be doing it already.

There is way more surface on top of the substrate then the sides. Meaning more mushrooms could form? I might be wrong here but thats how I see it.

But hey, keep us updated on your progress Im all for trying new things.

one of the main complaints i see is people saying they have side pins. Then asking how to prevent side pins? then its: i have side pins what should i do?!

Maybe it’s just me but i see on tons of posts people complaining about only getting side pins.

I also had the idea because i was trying the invitro tek with a baggie on a 1/2 pint cake and got a bunch of side pins going.

side pins take about 0 effort. maybe even negative amounts of effort!

My attitude is generally to take something bad and spin it into a positive.

Just asking advice on creating sidepins, am I allowed to do that?

Some people just find they're a nuisance....others don't mind them, but ideally you want the pin set to be focused on the top of the substrate. To each there own I guess :shrug:

Maybe you could try laying a plastic or saran wrap down over the surface.  It will basically make the whole surface just as choked of air as the sides, so there will be no preference for where to pin.  You'll still get "top" pins, but you'll get more side pins.

It might also work to just keep the sub taped off for a lot longer.  Or you could try letting the surface completely dry out.

The people who are only getting pin sets on the side of the substrate are getting poor yields.
The mushrooms are pinning there because the microclimate formed between the wall and substrate or the bottom are the most suitable places to pin.
The mushrooms *want* to fruit, it would make much more sense just to learn how to maintain proper surface conditions , if you do that getting a good pin set / yield takes very little effort.

I like the idea of flipping shoebox subs on their side and fruiting in a larger tub if they get a ton of side pins. I don't like side pins cause they're a pain to harvest if you're keeping something for a second flush, subs get broken/fucked up trying to get at sidepins sometimes. They end up getting super amounts of moisture cause where they are too sometimes starting to rot...

It's not an ideal situation to have suffocating side/bottom pins :shrug: even if they might grow well

I just tamp the edges during spawn. Seems to be doing well.

Meh yeah. That looks like an absolute kick in the balls. And its risky trying to take the sub out because of all the odds of it falling apart and whatever.

Damn that's crazy how much bottom pinning though....

I managed to get all those out without much issue and then ended up breaking the sub in half when I was trying to drain the water after a dunk

I say all pins are good, aborts are annoying to clean on any side.
Edit: too many pins can be no bueno
Also, one could gently pluck the pins from the edges and transplant them to the top side...:shocked:

As long as you harvest them and get them properly dusted off they are just as fun to handle in my opinion, side pins > no pins :aweyeah:

All my monotubs are old and have the six hole configuration, so I can't float the sub up to harvest like Bodhisatta does. So I use liners, heavy stuff - the rolls of 3mil plastic drop cloth from the paint section at the hardware store.
It's super easy to just grab the cornets and lift the substrate right out. Harvesting any side pins is a breeze that way.

I don't like to leave bottom fruits to get all nasty either. I harvest the top, set the substrate on top of the lid, and then another lid or piece of cardboard on top , sandwich the substrate and flip it over to harvest the bottom.

I guess jst create the same conditions on all sides, then they wud all be side pins.
Like wrap it in wax paper or something.

I mulled over this a bit after my first tub, but i thnk the problem is that smooshed dongers take up more estate then if they were growing strait up.

I dnt mind them. Sometimes they look cool. I jst pull the sides of the tub away from the sub and rip them out.
I dnt really get them on the bottom though. That sounds like a pain in the ass.
