Reasonably cheap nutrient agar

Amazon has bulk bags of agar (250g) and malt extract (454g)

2:3 Agar:DME ratio has worked great

Example: 300ml water + 6g agar + 9g DME = about 10 plates

Thats 410+ plates for $24

Yep.  I get agar even cheaper at the big Asian grocery store.

The store in town charges 1.50 a package. They are 25g each iirc. So that's about what I pay. There are better deals if you can find them

MEA is an expensive choice, unflavored mashed taters and a drop of honey works, and almost halves your price point.

Not by much. LME is about 10 bucks for 1/2 pound. I know potato flakes is cheaper by alot but we are talking about maybe 8 bucks difference.

I live in alberta canada-I can get agar agar at asian food store- some Thai brand that I can not read the brand name-so cheap, like $1.75 a pack.The light malt is $10.00 a bag that will last years-I use rice flour/honey also- so my agar dirt cheap.Use the malt agar then transfer to a rice flour/honey agar.
Works good for me.So far I have used like $4.00 worth of material or so in the last 6 months of Agar work.

Why even buy lme? I get that it lasts. Bit we allllllll have either brf or grain. Brf can be used for agar and grain soak water can also be used. So u would literally only need to buy agar, which like he said is under $2.

I like malt and $5 worth lasts me a half a year it gets clumpy and i toss it out before i even use a whole bag. Besides it tastes amazing
