It was dry when they went in. Then the rain started and they got trapped and forced deeper into the cave.

That was one of the plans. Problem was it was the beginning of the rainy season and the chamber they were in eventually flooded. As it was it took redirecting a small river and continuously pumping out insane quantities of water. They only went for the drug-and-drag option after the pumps started failing.

There's a good documentary out on PBS somewhere. If you're interested.

It worked. Ketamine is typical for anesthetizing children in surgery . Still very interesting
