Caving with the Duck, Part II *with pics*

That's me at the entrance. All these pics were taken today.
I like to think I?m in good shape, but this cave kicked my ass. ToiletDuk and I have gone a couple miles underground several times, but we only got about 500 feet into this cave. It was pretty grueling.
Duck checks out some formations in the first room.
We stopped several times in the first two rooms to take photos of some decent formations, but after a bit of this, we put the camera away and did some serious caving, most of it crawling through very tight passage.
Lucid D (that's me) in the second room.
After a while, we came to a 1 foot high belly crawl leading to a climbdown and through yet more tight passage before emerging in a canyon at the base of a pit. The pit is easily climbable and emerges back in the main passage just below the awkward climbdown pictured here:
Duck proved himself worthy by slithering through some spots that are smaller than he is. No claustrophobe here! The Duck is man up! The squeeze pictured here is even harder to negotiate than it looks. And this was only one of several. Just after this is an even tighter one.
We'll have to work on our endurance before tackling the 75-foot belly crawl that leads to bigger cave. Maybe in a month or two.
 Stuff on the ceiling

Toilet D in one of the few walking passages.
When we got back outside, I realized I had forgotten to eat breakfast, so I chowed on some Gorp. We looked for another cave nearby, then called it a day. Another great day underground! Life is great.
You got the mud in yer blood, D.

looks cool as hell, but I gotta say, the belly crawl would flip me out. Id have to be stoned or something to that effect to forget that i am stuck between two giant hard places 1 foot apart. yikes

Wow, that looks like craploads of fun. Do you have to have a lot of experience to cave? Or can I just grab a flashlight and a bottle of water and go?

You need experience. Flashlights are not suitable for caving. Newbies need guides. Your mileage may vary.
And, of course, ya gotta have a good pair of sunglasses.

Looks fun. I reckon you need a hell of a flashlight though... and alot of searching with it to find the next passage.

Oh man. I'm not claustrophobic at all. But to the extreme I am! Extreme as in squeezing down a 1 ft tunnel of solid rock, no thanks. Just thinking about it makes me feel wierd. Like if you got stuck, and started freaking out and thrashing your body but nothing gives cause it is solid rock. Ah!!!!!

Yeah, I'd probably flip out in that small of a space. I think it'd be worse if I were stoned or drunk. Not to mention more dangerous.
But hell, I'd love to go caving if I ever got over my claustraphobia. Looks really fun! And dirty!

> What does one need to start caving
A caving buddy, a hard hat, and a hands free light are pretty much manditory. Good boots, warm clothes, hard knee pads, and cheap gloves are also nice.
I used to be on a cave rescue team many years ago. In eight years I was only involved with one rescue, but had a lot of good times. I don't know anybody that likes caves that doesn't like to party.

Also, being thin is a decided advantage!

Yep! Nothing like getting baked in a cave! It helps me commune with my furry brothers, the bats.

Advantage yes, manditory no. I knew several people that were rather large that still managed to squeeze through some pretty tight crawls. I used to be sickly thin in those days, and could usually be found trying to squeeze through a tiny crack looking for a virgin passage. I was also an avid rock climber, and the two went hand in hand. Of course thin has disadvantages in caves as well... I would always get cold quickly... in fact, the closest I have been to death happened while exploring a cave due to hypothermia. The cave was called devil's icebox, no less.

I did an interesting subterrainain biological survey in various caves in Tennessee when I was a graduate student. There's nothing like crawling around on your hands and knees in bat crap for hours on end counting trogolophile beetles! I don't know what freaked me out more, being in very tight quarters or having centipedes crawl all over me. It's like two of my biggest fears rolled into one. After that I vowed never to go in to a cave again.
Great pics btw!

Yeah, it can fuck with your head. I almost psyched myself out staring at the crawl before I went in. But once you go in, it's not as bad as you thought it would be. It definitely makes you uneasy, but it's really a mental thing. I know a lot of hardcore cavers who freak in tight spots. This one lady can bounce a 500-foot deep pit in a cave in Georgia, but can't handle crawls. Me, I'm terrified of heights, but I can handle crawls just fine.
There was something unsettling about feeling the ceiling rub against my back as I did the land-crab. And I'm not the smallest guy in the world to begin with.

I want to go caving too. I don?t have the equipment (I have climbing gear tho, it can be useful in caves, right?), and to my knowledge there are no caves in Finland.
Blah.

True, and as you can see from the pics, I'm a bit thick in the middle as well. I was sure envying you skinny guys when I was squeezing through those tight spots! Life ain't easy when you're fat 'n greasy! Ummikko :Being able to climb can get you into some very interesting caves! KindKesey: Yep! That's the one.
