Caving / Hiking / Climbing / Exploring
    #3398075 - 11/23/04 01:51 PM (12 years, 14 days ago)

So what are you into?

Pennsylvania's full of beautiful scenery for hiking, and we have tons of wooded area.. but as far as caving goes our caves seem to all be basically heavily restricted..

Anyone know of a lot of cave systems that don't have restricted access?  Nothing gets the blood going like a bit of exploration.

I know a lot of shroomery people are into this stuff, are there any AMAZING places I need to check out?

There's some ice caves around here that are pretty cool, as long as you're not claustrophobic. I've heard that you can get from one side of the mountain right through to the other, although I've never been able to find a way out.

Wow, you happen to know what the cave system's called?

And have you ever heard of anyone trying to make it from one side to the next?

I've talked to people that said they went from one side to the other...but it depends alot on what time of year it is, since alot of it freezes shut in the winter. The best time to go is in the summer when there are more openings available. Some of the spaces you need to crawl through are very small, just big enough to squeeze through if you take off your jacket. There's also a small 'chimney' that you need to climb in order to get to the rest of the cave.

I can't remember the proper name for them, but I'll see if I can find it.

I found a website with pics of the hike to the caves and a little of the inside, although it doesn't really do it justice.

There are a lot of caves around where I live. One of the touristy ones has a very deep underground lake with albino&blind fish in it. I've found a lot on my own just hiking up cliffs near rivers.

Mammoth Cave in Kentucky is supposed to be awesome from what I hear from friends. Legend & people today say it has a passage to an underworld. I am going there next summer.

Mammoth cave is amazing.  Atleast from what I've heard and seen in pictures.

It's hobbies like this that I wish would turn into a career.

I love caving and hiking! You should join your local Grotto (a sort of club for cavers) to find out about caves in your area...

I havent been caving at all, but I do regularly go backpacking. Nothing like strapping 40 or more pounds on your back and hiking up a mountain. Its times like those I wish I wasnt a smoker  Been around here and there. I did 10 days on Isle royale in the UP, that was a blast and I checked out a portion of the AT this last spring. Im planning to do the whole through hike from Georgia to Maine as soon as I can find 4 months to kill and the money to cover my ass while Im gone.
