Possible honey mushrooms found in Berkeley

My friends have the environment picture, but they were growing on the hillside under oak leave or something and many of them looked like deers and squirrels were eating them... Anyone know what they are and if I can eat them? They smell earthy like the ones in the grocery store

Awesome! I was leaning towards Armilla.... Prints will be collected and hopefully an agar culture made. Are these easy to cultivate?

They grow on agar and make cool tentacles, but the culture seems to die out after a bit.

That's good to know.... So if I made an agar culture can't I make a liquid culture and use that to start a grow outdoors? I've seen a lot of success just mixing caps with water and pouring it over susceptible soil and that's enough to cause cultures to start outdoors. Shouldn't this work with an agar solution or fresh caps?

I'd be interested in a wedge if you get that far, or in a spore print. I have some Armillaria spores germinating right now from a print I got from wild collection.
I have seen people successfully grow them, but harvest amount was always pretty low.

I personally won't be doing it due to space constrains, but a few friends should be attempting it

Edit: I did make some prints, but no guarantee on their viability. If your local I can pass you a print, but I'm too broke to mail now.

Wow those caps are very dark compared to the armillaria I typically find here in the northeast. It's more of a yellowy or tawny color usually wherase that is a dark brown. Is that typical for west coast A. mellea collections?

They were able to dry a bit before I got home. When I picked them they were hearty and fresh with a solid white stem darkening at points with more of a brown cap.

Yes, they are probably actually a new species, if the one Armillaria mellea sequence in GenBank from California is to be believed.

Really?! Alan do you want a print? I'll also throw the printing caps in a bag in the fridge if that can save it for agar. That if your still in the Bay area

Edit: unfortunately the two heaviest prints have mushroom bits that got stuck to the tinfoil. I have one good print and one somewhat wet cap in the fridge. Again Alan if you're in the bay area and want to grab this that would be cool. If you can't where can I go to get this properly identify in the bay area where they can identify it and document it if it is? As well as use the spores to create an agar culture or something?

tacodude, the prints with the bits stuck are perfectly fine to use for a culture. With proper dilution and subsequent culture cleaning it should be fairly straight forward to do.

Oh... I thought you said they might be new. If it's not a new variety and just a common one then it doesn't matter

Edit: I was planning to use the print for agar and to use with a microscope if I somehow find one to use.

what's wrong with more mushrooms growing if they are not toxic or anything? It's food for raccoons and squirrels too that is better for them then our garbage. It would also feed deer if it was in the right area.

Because Armillaria species kill large amounts of living trees.

It'd be a lot cooler if you spread something like a Sparassis sp.

Oh.... That's no good. I guess I'll just use the spores for agar cultures and if I get a microscope. If I had a good species to spread I definitely would. Hopefully I find one soon.
