The great mushroom expedition...TONS of pictures!

Well, here's a pictorial to my mushroom hunt. All these specimens were found in about an hours time. Every angle you looked there was fungi growing. Way too many species for me to take home and ID...plus I only had my camera. I didn't expect all of them to be out and about. The first two are the ones I am most interested in... I have never picked an oyster, and was wondering if they looked like them to anyone. They are the second picture set down after the bolete:

Would be great if anyone would want to take a stab at any of the mushrooms. I just was taking pictures for the hell of it, maybe go back out again to collect some.

The first two are a suspected bolete, as to what species, I am unsure.



Here is a suspected oyster.




I was finding these everywhere. They are about 10 inches long, and the caps were on average about 4 inches in diameter. Very large.



These caps were only about 1-2 mm in diameter.










These two are of the same mushroom.



Ahhhhh!! An alien!! :smile: Oh its just a newt...whew.


And the smallest mushrooms I have ever seen in my life. They were on average 1mm in diameter. Notice the pine needles...

Sweet ass bundle of shrooms!  Most people would think your crazy for running around the woods all excited to find mushrooms.  But i feel ya homie  :grin:

niiiiiiiiiiice.
the first looks like boletus mirabilis.
the second is a pleurotus for sure, prolly ostreatus, right?
and the little white guys are with the older guys, yes?
then the honey lookin stuff, i don't know...nor can i guess on the little cap/stem white guys..
the next one though, is suillus, i believe.
followed by mycena, oyster, then honeys for sure. beyond that, it's all latin to me...

i wish i had somewhere to find that many species right now...

Ooo... Wait, the bolete is definetly Boletus zelleri. The mirabilis was right next to it in my book, and im like...WAIT thats it! :smile: hehe

Still wondering about that pleurotus. Im really hoping they are indeed ostreatus! :smile:

VERY nice post! I'm not to sure about the ID of your mushrooms, but I can tell you what the "newt" is. It's a type of salamander called Ensatina, only found on the west cost. That face is a classic Ensatina salamander face :smile: I would have been tempted to keep him as a pet.
It's nice to see someone is still finding mushrooms, they all froze here a few weeks ago =\

i ate some zelleri last year from the fall creek area of oregon.
i fried some mirabilis from the coast around newport.
both delicious.
rock on.
someone will help with the oysters momentarily, right?

Those are definitely oysters, they look just like the ones I grew a while back.

What kind of camera did you take the pics with?

Yay! I was really thinking they were oysters, they were growing from a fallen oak branch. Im going to go back tomorrow morning and pluck some. Get a spore print too.

Going to cook them up in a stirfry, sound good?

Anyways, I am using a Sony DSC-P3 2.8 megapixel digi-cam. Its pretty sweet, and the macro is just awsome.

WOW!!! Great finds and nice pics. If you have the garden space I'd go back and get the whole branch that holds the oyster mycelium! I would love to get some of those going!

Gumby, you probably got it right on the salamander. I am in the SF bay area. Its been foggy enough lately for us to finally get some shroomage. I REALLY was not expecting to find much today, because it only rained for the first time in a month.

However temps have dropped, and there was mushrooms just everywhere...really amazing.

Im going out again tomorrow to see what I can find!  :smile:

12 Armillaria

14 Psathyrella hydrophila (http://www.grzyby.pl/gatunki/Psathyrella_piluliformis.htm)
16, 17 Pleurotus

Some of the Pleurotus species you found could be also Pleurotus cystidiosus http://fp.bio.utk.edu/mycology/Pleurotus/pleurotusindex.htm

Honey Mushrooms.
I found 70+ pounds wet yesterday in the woods of the central coast.
Could only carry 10 pounds out with me. I really found the motherload.

The bolete looks like Boletus zelleri, although to be certain it would be good to see more detail on the stem.

The next group sure look like Pleurotus to me. There are several very similar Pleurotus species, but they are all edible. You should verify spore print color to be sure (it should be white to pale lilac).

The next ones look like Armillaria mellea, Honey mushrooms. Verify that they have a white spore print. Although edible, many people have problems with them, so try them cautiously if you decide to eat them.

The little white guys look similar to Mycena delicatella. To ID them accurately to species we need to use a microscope.

The next one, with the interesting ring on the stem I can't see enough of to guess.

The next group look like more Mycenas, similar to Mycena clavicularis.

Then there's more Oysters and some more Honey Mushrooms.

Those yellow guys look like they might be Gymnopilus. I'm not sure from the photo - were they growing on wood?

The next ones, with the brown caps, look like Stropharia maybe. If growing from wood I might guess Hypholoma.

The next ones we really need a spore print for. I'll wildly guess that they resemble Pholiota alnicola, but that's a pretty wild guess.

Then some more Oysters and a newt!

Those last ones resemble Mycena fusco-oculata. As with other Mycenas (and the nearby genera), we really need to use a microscope to ID them accurately.


Nice photos. Looks like you had a pretty good foray.

So you think the last white ones growing from the wood are oysters? Do they usually ruffle like that when they reach maturity?

That ruffling is unusual. It could be caused by environmental factors (usually rainfall or lack of) or it could be the result of genetics (this could be an unusual strain). If you verify the spore print then you're fine.

Well I didn't collect them because I didn't think they were oysters! It was weird, because I found only 3 locations with pleurotus, and most of them looked like porrigens (Angel wings)... There were inmature specimens with greyer caps which in my opinion looked like inmature oysters, which I am going to go collect in a few days.

By the way, how long do oysters take to mature?

THe others were like the ruffled version. I should have collected a specimen from each variation and done some more work, however I was coming accross so many mushrooms.... lol.
