Grain the way
    #25699330 -

Lol
OK so I'm buying bulk 50kg bags of grain
I found all for the same price(like a few cents more or less)
Red sorghum
White sorghum
Oats
Wheat
(Oh and WBS seems to cost more:shrug:)
(There about a $ per 10kg)

So here's my Q
What would you guys take?
My grains are split 10% for Cubs and actives and 90% for edibles
Edibles are oyster, shiitake, lions mane, reishi (although I have take reishi to grain yet)

Lastly oats can someone point me to a nice tek for oats?
Please
And thanks.

(Edit my maths was way off its 30$ for 50kgs)

I'd take the oats over the wheat
if you end up taking oats, my recomendation is that you dry them up really good before loding the jars. it has happened to me that the oats looked dry enough but after loading the jars and pcing them, they came out way too moist. Which didnt happen to me while using rye

Ye I'd prefer to use rye

But see I use no prep teks
Basically loading my 200l drum with bags so I'd fill grain and then add water and then PC
Oats I want for some truffles so there prep is not to much of a problem seen as I'd probably use one of my small PCs

I like oats, but I want whole oats. They have the hulls on them.

Whole oats , I use 1 quart dry for 3 quarts wet.  Just put a pot on the stove bring water to a boil. Dump grain in, turn stove off put lid on, let sit for 40 minutes. Dump on screen ,spread out letting it cool about 15 minutes and fill in jars.

That's good and all but we are talking a 100 quarts of spawn per week and sometime I'd like to x3 it

I’ve been getting the red sorghum lately and it’s so easy. Soak for 24 hours, then rinse, load up bags and pressure cook. Seems like the grains don’t burst as easily with the sorghum.

Same for large amounts of whole oats. Just soak ,strain, bag and sterilize . Never had screwed up moisture with whole oats.

I use a mixture of sorghum, millet, and whole oats. At a ratio of 25/25/50. If I only had those choices, I would do 50/50 Red sorghum and whole oats. Soak for 24 hours drain for 30 to 60 mins and in the steamer they go.

If you haven't seen a rye berry tek look up roger rabbits rye berry tek. Easy to follow and very simple. I did my first batch on the 27th and now they're over 50% colonized with zero contams and no standing water. Thoroughly impressed with myself.

I only use oats because I can get a 50lb bag for ~$6. I've never bothered finding Rye (reported to be the gold standard).

This is the tek I use: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/24126032

Interesting info

Plan to win or you are planning for failure. Don't let anyone tell you you can't do it. Just figure out the solution. Even if that means banging your head on a wall until the solution oozes out of you.

Where do you get oats at that price?
Best I found at a feed store was $18 plus tax.

I'll second the opinion about the dryness of oats. They should be hydrated and then dried completely before sterilized.  Or you are going to set yourself up for a bacteria show.  IMO, they are used based on price and availability, NOT quality.  If you are making 1000 quarts a week of grain spawn, maybe time to switch over to using straw or sawdust, and just use grain for masters.

I like Tradd Cotter's book, "Organic Mushroom Farming and Mycoremediation.  He suggests Rye and Wheat as the top 2.  Then Millet (WBS component) or wheat to expand those cultures.

Pretty sure Rye is the crowd favorite if quality is your goal.  Folks have moved away from it on this site to WBS and Oats because of price.

I use oats because it is fast and fool proof for me. Ive tried every grain except straight milo. Nothing to do with price.
