Any diabetic tripsters here?

Hey it's been while since I've posted here.

I have type one Diabetes. For those that don't know it means my pancreas stopped producing insulin, which breaks down sugars in the blood allowing them to be absorbed by the cells. So I have to try and mimic what a healthy pancreas would do by injecting insulin when I eat sugars, including bread, pasta, all carbs not just desserts.

It's a constant guessing game, and its not unusual to take too much or too little insulin which leads to high and low blood sugar levels which can be really bad. I could pass out, even go into a coma if I fuck it up.

So I'm wondering if anyone else here has experience dealing with diabetes while tripping?

I was 22 and fairly experienced with psychedelics when I got diagnosed. I've tripped a handful of times since then but never more than a threshold dose, and I was never really able to relax and enjoy the experience like I used to. I stopped taking psychedelics awhile ago. In part because they kept bringing up emotions that I didn't want to face, but the diabetes was a big factor too. Pricking your finger to test your blood with a head full of acid isn't super fun. And trying to remember what the number was, and how long it's been since you ate, and calculating insulin doses is even harder.

I feel like the key to having a good experience on psychedelics is a care free attitude, and I haven't been able to be care free for 6 years now. I don't know that I'm ready to trip again just yet, but I can't imagine going the rest of my life without ever revisiting that realm.

So if you're type 1 or know someone who is and still trips, how do you do it?

My buddy has diabetes and he has tripped shrooms a lot since his diagnosis.

TBH, I'm not sure if if he has type 1 or type 2, though.

Is there anything you can do to make the insulin calculations easier?

Probably a silly suggestions, but are there any apps where you can just enter your information and it calculates the dosage for you?

That might be easier than figuring it out while tripping.

Are you a mostly solo tripper? If you have a trip sitter, maybe you could get them to help you?

A friend of mine has low suger issues and he just has snacks and juice around and makes sure hes on point before the trip and checks his numbers about 45 minutes after ingestion.

Weed also effects his sugar levels crazily

Thanks for the replies guys! Sorry it took me awhile to get back.

I'm sure there are insulin dose calculation apps. I have a standard ratio I use to dose insulin, 1 unit per 10 grams of carbs. So I could always plug that into an app and have it do the division for me. The problem is that our metabolisms are not always working the same. There are a lot of factors that affect how efficiently your body breaks down sugar, physical activity, stress, heat, time of day, ect. So that ratio is constantly changing. It's a guessing game.

I've taken very small doses and gotten very low because I was working out earlier in the day. I can also take huge doses and still end up with high sugar because I was sitting on the couch smoking weed all day. I usually need higher doses in the morning and smaller ones in the afternoon when my metabolism is warmed up. So it's not really an issue with being able to do the math, but more just the stress of what if I guess wrong?

Psychedelics make me feel weird, and there's usually at least a little bit of fear mixed in when they start to hit. I used to be able to say "its just the drugs, you're fine." but now I never know if it is just the drugs or if I am actually dying. I can check my sugar and reassure myself but then 5 minutes later I'm worried again. It prevents me from letting go and enjoying the trip.

You know the people that get naked at festivals and such? I've never been one to do that, too self conscious, but I understand the mindset. When I get high I usually want to throw away or give away all my stuff. The last time I ate mushrooms I was sitting outside my house looking at my glucometer/insulin, and I just wanted to throw it as far as I could. But I can't.

I think you're right about the trip sitter, I need someone with me who I know has my back. But I also want my friends with me to be just as high as I am. That's what I miss the most about tripping, the group mind kinda thing you get going with your crew, geeking out about stupid shit, knowing that for better or worse you're all in it together.

I don't know, maybe I'll just wait until technology advances to the point that diabetes is easier to manage. Or I guess I should say that I'll wait until the technology that already exist becomes affordable.

I heard that the Gov made the "Freestyle Libre flash glucose monitoring system" available to everyone recently.

Yeah I wish I lived in a country that didn't make you choose between paying rent or paying for medicine.

The glucose monitoring systems like that are the tech I was referring to. Unfortunately I make too much money to qualify for medicaid, but not enough to spend thousands on that. I already spend over two thousand a year on medications and that's with a health insurance plan that I pay more than 100 a month for.

Also that link is for medicare which is only for elderly people. Medicaid, for poor people, doesn't cover anything but the basics.

I'm hopeful that maybe next year I can upgrade my insurance plan and then get one of those monitoring systems. It will still cost thousands, but with a better plan I should hit my out of pocket max before the year is out then I'd get "free" insulin for the second half of the year. But the premium would probably be at least 200 a month. I already have a fair amount of debt, but adding on to it for this would be worth it.

They makes ones that send the info to your phone every 15 minutes. It graphs the data, and sets off alarms if you go too high or to low. It would be a life changer.

DMT is a great idea! I can just make sure I'm nice and level before I smoke it, and the trip wont last long enough for that to change! I don't know why I didn't think of that lol I never really delved into DMT, mostly just acid and mushrooms. I might look into that thanks man!
