The other possibility is that it's mycelial waste (mushroom shit). This usually happens with older mycelium or occasionly in jars where there is too much humidity/too hot.

If it starts coming in in Technicolor, worry. If it stays white/off white I wouldn't worry too much. Wait to see what happens. In the end if the jar is fine, you can always just cut away any suspect areas.

i have some birthed cakes with greenish brown fuzzy spots around the bases, i need to know if its ok to eat the shrooms that grew off it

Also in a jar MANY types of mycelium are growing at once. So it is possible (and I've had it happen to me) that half of your jar is rhizomorphic (ropey) and half tomentose (cottony). In your case it sounds like you have a small sector of tomentose mycelium.

And while I'd tend to agree that we get some antibiotics from mold, fungus is very different than mold.
