There is this super productive panaeolus patch at the college I attend. I've picked hundreds over the past two weeks. Every time I visit, there is more (probably because I plant stem butts every time).

I stayed on the ground.
Numerous attempts at finding the longest branches I could, lashing them together, tying my knife to the end, and poking at it.

It took me about an hour
Lots of looking around the woods for longer, straighter, sturdier branches that were not too heavy.
And having them break and come falling down on me.
At one point they snapped and my knife was wedged in the mushroom up in the tree.
That's why one looks all mangled.

Disclaimer - I'm just a hobbyist and cannot absolutely guarantee any ID offered. I'm most familiar with the species found in the Pacific Northwest - those found in other parts of the world may vary considerably, so always do your own research to find out what grows in your area and what lookalikes you need to be aware of. Understand that many mushroom species cannot be 100% reliably identified by photographs alone, even by an expert, so it may not be possible to go beyond suggesting a probable genus.
