ONE giant oyster?! Nooooooo!! No?!

In the coastal Oregon forest looking chanterelles. I found this girl way up on a tree. It doesnt look dead. But the mushroom has a big stem.... ?? I dont think it's a oyster mushroom. It's also huge. It also smells great like a cauliflower mushroom.

Check out dryad's saddle - yours looks quite like one. When I get home I'll check matchmaker to see if there's other similar species.

Dryads Saddle has pores, not gills. This is a yuge oyster

Be careful trusting sites like that to identify your mushrooms, it's a very bad idea, technology hasn't advanced enough in my opinion and experience for it to be safe, yet.

It's not a site- it's a database and I don't rely on it for ID's. I do use it to check for similar and related species that should be researched. No worries... I'm well aware that its not awesome at returning good search results. What it is good at is providing one of the more comprehensive lists of PNW species that is available anywhere, along with pretty detailed info on each of them.

Of course. I usually look into everyone's claims and then if I'm still slightly unsure, it gets tossed. Not worth the doctors bill.

I think I must have the incorrect common name. Pleurotus dryinus, which is my intention to refer to, has gills and a stem.

OK- having a better look.. I could only see the pictures tiny before and it brings up questions. What kind of tree is that? Hardwood or conifer? Does the mushroom have a stem. I thought it did, but looking at the bigger photos, it's not clear if that is a stem or just another lobe of the mushroom.

I do not see any similar, locally listed, species to Pleurotus dryinis, which has thus far been the only really big oyster-like mushroom I've found, but it is shown as being found on hardwoods, not conifers. All of the others I've come across with similar characteristics are very small... maybe you have a giant mutant :wink:
