ID Help: Cracked Red Guy

I was just looking through some older photos of mine, and realized I'd never taken the time to ID this one. Not really sure what it is, but it's the only angle I have. It was found during the late-summer in New York.

I've read conflicting things about russula Emetica being a valid north American species. There are alot of red colored species though, it's possibly even edible(dont take my word on that)
