it looks like Ramaria araiospora (light red coral), which is a good edible, but i think those don't grow in your area (i'm assuming south carolina) or this season.
Clavulina amethystina look similar and do grow in your area.

i would wait for someone else to positively identify it. including more info would help id it.

I've seen those in Hitchcock Woods before. Did you find it under a magnolia tree?

It's a Coral Fungus, genus Ramaria. Beyond that, they're incredibly tough to identify to species, even with a microscope.

As far as edibility, lots of them are edible, and some of them are poisonous. The poisonous ones mostly cause diarrhea, and sometimes nausea and vomiting.

I'll note that your specimen resembles Ramaria formosa, a species which is known to be poisonous.

If you want to eat it, first check and see if it's hot (peppery) or bitter tasting. If so, don't eat it. The other thing to check is if the inside (when you cut it in half) is gelatinous inside. Again, if it is, don't eat it. When you try it, cook it up and eat only a small amount the first evening (a teaspoon or less). If you still feel OK by morning (and you want to), go ahead and eat more.

They're certainly among the prettier mushrooms you find.

Happy mushrooming!

Dear Sloan:
I must admit that it does look strikingly similiar to Ramaria formosa.
Observe this picture of Ramaria formosa:

See the similarities? Be wary!

I don't live in Aiken, but I used to. Really cool find though, I'll keep my eye out next time I'm around there.

I think these Ramarias are mycorrhizal. If so, to cultivate them you need to cultivate host trees and innoculate them. It's probably easier to pick 'em in the woods.

If you want to cultivate a coral mushroom, try Clavicorona pyxidata which grows on wood and is edible.

Good luck and happy mushrooming!
