There’s nothing wrong with feeling pride from or wanting the best for something you contribute to. The issue is when people have so much pride that it blinds them to serious problems which should be addressed.

I’d call myself a patriot but I’m not sure about nationalist.

Part of believing in your country is being able to critique it and want to better it.

Unbridled nationalism historically has not allowed for this.

What are you going to do if the US is invaded?  Join the other side? 

What did blacks do in WW1 and WW2?  Sometimes you do what's best for your survival and your ego gets put on the shelf.

You have the luxury of being highly judgmental in 2018 living in a first world nation, not everyone has that privilege.

Would really depend on the specific circumstances of the invasion.

My only loyalty is to myself and the people I know. I am already under attack.

The entire country is crawling with roving gangs of bandits (aka police officers) who are trying to rob, imprison, or even kill me.

I can't even walk out the front door without risking my life and that is not an exaggeration.

If the other side is offering REAL freedom, then yeah, I would probably join them.

Not saying that would be the case, but I'm definitely not blindly loyal to the USA.

I'm going to pick whichever side is going to treat me better.

In most cases, yes, that would probably be the US.

But if the Canadians invaded I might switch to their team :shrug::lol:

Things can easily change in a couple decades, but at this point the US government is the biggest threat to US citizens.

A Nationalist doesn't think for themselves, their thoughts and positions are determined by the culture makers and the people in power.

It's a survival mechanism, that's why it's so strong in humans and always will remain strong.

Yes, it's nice to sit on the sidelines and scrutinize people that embrace it. Yet, you and I are no different and our survival instincts would kick in and embrace some form of it if needed.

I agree, there's drawbacks to everything, including tribalism.  It can be used to exploit others for personal gain.

The fact that is so ingrained in humans shows us that the benefits of it outweigh its drawbacks.
