Similarity or difference between Agar to Agar and G2G
    #25538543 -

I noticed to my surprise that G2G cycles result in unhealthy or slow mycelium if you continue doing it (after about 4 or 5 cycles). What I mean is when I continuously use colonized jars (that were knocked through G2G) to knock a new batch of jars and keep doing it.

My question is why isn't it the same with agar transfers? If I keep transferring to new plates I will not get unhealthy mycelium isn't it? Can anyone tell me what's the difference?

My guess is that the mycelium in G2G has lived its life over and over again. Agar does not get much room for growth in its dish so maybe it loves the chance to stretch its legs. :stoned:

It will. Think about how far the myc has to grow. There's many more kilometers of mycelium in a jar than on a plate.

Sounds like there is truth in it... apparently it loses vigor after expending it's energy. Much different then plant roots. You could go on and on reproducing it...

It's about surface area and cell division which are kinda related. The more surface area the myc has to cover the more cell division you get. You'll be able to transfer a lot more generations of plates before the affects of age begin to show. G2G brings out these affects faster because of increased surface area.
