Turkey Tail Find? - Northern Virginia

Found over 100 of these fungi growing on a wet soaked wooden fence in a park. On a nearby cut stump they were also seen.

All 5 identifiers point towards turkey tail, but I just wanted to ask someone knowledgeable before I consume these things.

They seem to have attracted some sort of red and black parasites. They don't qualify as "mites". They are something else. I have been washing with warm water and lite soap to get them off. They seem to be able to live underwater for long periods of time. But, do these creatures make these non consumable in any way? Or take away nutrients from the fungi in any way?

Thanks, and tomorrow I will take more pictures of them on the fence and on the stump.

I was able to kill all of the mites by keeping them submerged for a few hours. This is the best way I think since they just all fell off and washed away.


Right now the fungi are soaking in some warm water, they feel amazing, and smell amazing. sweet like. leather like. they have changed color under water as you can see.

Looks like turkey tail with some old age to them to have a browned/greyed spore area. The one in the top left of pic #1 should be signifying actual color is supposed to be full white as supposed to be. The pores also appear to be the size you want from these photos. The tops/surface look how they are supposed to.

I'd say it's turkey tail.. It's just aged. There should have been two lookalikes (in my area) that would be really close (considering seeing the tops of these) and the pores are either non existent (with brown centers in the pore area similar to the aged browning) or very large on those, and these don't appear to be either of those, the pores look right on these photos.

I found some like this the other day I knew was turkey tail due to being beside fresher ones of the same phenotypes/colors.
