ID Request please (hopefully liberty caps) - NW England (East Lancs)
    #25519514 -

Hi all, first time post and novice hunter so please go easy. That said, I've put some fair old time in researching and observing before diving in and starting picking. I'm desperate to try micro-dosing with liberty caps for treatment resistant depression so won't be taking anything in large numbers. Ironically, the act of researching and hunting has been the most animated and motivated I've felt in a long while!

I picked these early this morning following a wet spell and a drop in temperature in a field I'd looked at 3 days ago and found some but not many. Its an unimproved livestock field at approx 230m altitude, north facing slopes, evidence of sheep dung everywhere and massive amounts of sedge grasses. The mushrooms were growing either out in the open grass patches or within a few inches of the clumps of sedge grass, not directly out of dung.

Many were growing in small colonies of about 6-10 but a good proportion were growing in sporadic isolation albeit it didn't seem I had to go far between them to find others.

The ones I'm more confident about are those numbered. There's some "albino's" in there which surprised me as it was wet and cold when I picked them and my understanding is that they go the straw colour when drying out. However, I only picked the albinos if they were immediately adjacent to others which I was fairly happy were liberty caps.

The ones lettered are the "also rans" that I'm really not sure about. They've got the nipples and the wavy stems but some have paler gills and wider caps than the ones I typically associate as being liberty caps.

Haven't had chance to do any spore prints as yet.

Sorry if the photos aren't up to spec - its hard to know how much detail you seasoned veterans need to see to make an ID. I can do close ups if it helps. Thank you in advance.

Thanks, yes I've ditched that one before the rest went in the oven to dry. There was something not quite authentic about it. Its just so easy to get carried away when you're picking. Takes some self discipline not to go at everything that even half fits the bill! I left a load of babies behind as they were so tiny that even though you're sure they MUST be libs as they're growing right next to them. Still, gives me something to go back for hopefully!

Great find!

That’s what I was hoping for today but no liberty caps in site. I am new to it though so will remain patient and keep looking.

I've trecked through so many fields that fit the bill but with nothing in sight its easy to get discouraged. The best advice I found was to ask your local old stoners where they used to hunt and start there! I got one tip and that's the field I got this haul from despite the person giving me the tip not having set foot in that area for over 20 years.
