Thanx bud. Haven't used it for pasteurization yet. Might tho. I have been getting the "PE Itch" again.

I might try running my casing in it.

That sealer makes all the difference if you really want to run bags though. Trust me. I've got one of the 20 ebay ones too. Guess what it's collecting?

Oh I know. I have to turn it up all the way and cycle it 3 or 4 times to get a good seal on my spawn bags. What’s the one you got called and where can I get one? :crazy2:

Hey.. I just got a bunch of bags. You use LC for those right?
I am still cleaning up plates to get a clean sample for the Josex poke.
Hoping to use up them bags. They seem great.

I'm not currently running LC as my inoculant. I go 1 plate to 4 master jars and when those are ready I g2g into the bags. 1 master jar to like 8 bags, give or take.

Edit: you can totally use LC to knock up bags. I've done it many, many, many times...

This might be the dumbest question I ask all month but if you preseal the bags, how do you inoculate them?

This is straight from the guys over at Shroom Supply:

"These bags are "pre-sealed" before sterilizing by removing all excess air from the bag, folding excess bag material around the bag, and then allowing the bags to cool slowly and completely before removing them from the sterilizer."

Most Likely that is done with a "FoodSaver" type machine (air extraction and impulse sealer combo).

And then they put a molded RTV silicone SHIP on the bag (presumably stuck to the bag with a dab of RTV after applying alcohol to the location), and tape over it. Judging by the type of tape they use I imagine that RTV SHIP addition takes place after autoclaving (in front of a flow hood). It's just some plain clear shipping type tape.

Inject through the SHIP.

Sick of my DIY RTV SHIPs turning out ugly. Until I find a damn good way to make molds for those things I'm going to use these. Just came in today.

Using a "food-saver" or vacuum sealer won't work to remove excess air. Vac seal bags have those textured ridges inside in order for all the air to be removed. Vac sealers DO NOT work on regular bags of any type other than to seal them.

I used to make my own SHIPs on bags in the past. I'd use a dab of red RTV silicone and cover it with some good tape and into the pc. By the time the bags cool enough the silicone is set.

I'm not using LC currently so I'm not doing SHIPs on my bags. I use the .5 micron bags and pre-seal. I also unload my 75x while the bags are hot so I can get the next batch in and keep running. Out of a bushel of rye I get 21 4qt bags or 20 4qt bags and some master jars. Depends on how I'm feeling. And I can knock them out in my 75x in 3 runs. Hint: using timers gives you a lot of freedom to do other things while the 75x is running.

Sweet woodworking! Well done!

I use those same lil SHIPs on certain jar lids. They're great. I don't use them as much as I used to though.

Do any of you guys make your own bags? I've been trying to figure out how industry heat seals their filters onto the bags.

I'd rather buy them then use rtv on a damn bag.

Can't ya cut a dime size hole and use micropore tape and tyvek?
Was talking to Shoman. Yeah, i bought bags too.
Sorry for the confusion. I am trying to follow your bag tek Lotkid...

I looked in to it before.

I couldn't find an easy method of impulse sealing the patches on either, BUT I did run across a guy making his own bags...

Gusseted polypropylene treat bags. (Or you can source rolls of gusseted polypropylene.)

Guy took a hole punch, pulled the front face of the bag away from the back, pinched a crease, and used the hole punch to make two holes at once.

He then taped over the holes with a strip of masking tape.

I was going to change that to the use of a larger hole punch (you can easily find sizes up to 3" in .5" increments) and use micropore tape.

I wrote 3M to see what the gas exchange rate micron equivalent was for micropore tape but I never heard back from them (tried twice).

The "Tiger Drop" containers use one piece of micropore tape on the outside with no problems so chances are you would be fine. I overkill though. Would rather spend a little extra than take the hit on a whole bag... or bags.

To be safe I was going to use TYVEK under the micropore tape. Since I don't know the micron equivalent for the tape I was going to go with a "looser" weave on the TYVEK. Something like the 75gsm kite making material that can be bought in bulk rolls or sheets.

I wrote Dupont (once) asking about the micron equivalent for air exchange in regard to TYVEK and all the different TYVEK types available (the suits most people use are "TYVEK 400" for instance). I never heard back from them either.

Common sense is to stage your sizes up. 1" hole punch, 2" TYVEK patch, 3" 3M micropore tape. That's what I was thinking anyway.

But, that's your lead for mass production. People have done it.

For your SHIP: slap a blob of RTV on it, tape over it (I was going to overkill with Kapton tape) and you're off to the races.

I personally ditched that train to get on board with the monotubbies, and tiger drop(ping). Will convert over to "slurry-in-a-hurry" bulk spawning and bulk spawn slurry to substrate fast AF fruiting later.

The bags have their own benefits, and I'm sure some a$$hat is going to attack me for saying this... but... I believe that in the end I'm going to outpace the yields and cost effectiveness with the way I plan on doing my stuff.  The realestate of colonized substarte in one big-ole-bag is enough to fill a medium sized tub to 1.5"... roughly.  The yields will be more in the tub solely based on the surface area.  Just saying.  (*bracing for impact...*)

(Bags get thrown away, too. I'm not about pinching pennies but I am about calculating cost over time. That's a lot of bags. That adds up.)

And risk contaminating my hard work? No thank you. I'll stick with buying bags, thank you.

I'm busy enough making bags that I don't need to add "making bags" to my list.

And can you make them for less than $.30 per unit? If the answer is no then I rest my case.

Edit: I remember seeing, years ago, someone use turkey bags as spawn bags. I believe they used a small section of pvc tube stuffed with polyfil for GE and cover it with foil when you pc. You could probably zip tie the bag around the pvc. You could also knock it with LC or LI thru the polyfil with a long enough needle.

Man spawn bags are cheap enough that I’ve never even thought about making my own. I buy the large .5 micron bags from shroom supply. They’re 55 cents a piece, which is fine by me.

If I was doing 100 tubs a month, then bulk/homemade spawn bags make sense, but I’m not going to be doing anywhere near that. I just ordered 30 spawn bags and I think that will last me a couple months. I’ve only ever been able to cook 2 at a time (5 quarts of grain) in my 25x, but hamloaf told me he can fit 4 in his so I have to figure that out.
