I don't like the sound of harmonicas.

Every time I hear one I expect a herd of wild rednecks to materialize in front of me and try accost me in some savage manner.

Harmonicas were invented in Europe around the early 19th century, and similar Reed instruments have been used in Asia far longer. They are also used in all sorts of music around the world.

So associating them with rednecks seems weird. I thought the banjo was the redneck instrument.

Also there are at least a few kinds of harmonicas and they can sound different, and even the same one can sound different when played by someone else. So I guess my question is, what's not to like about them?

Nah, I'm not worried - I gave the guy a big sloppy kiss in thanks so what's the worst that can happen haha (he said he cleaned it with some rubbing alcohol first)

Banjo is used in some other genres of music too, e.g. Irish traditional music and some styles of jazz.

Eddie Clarke was an Irish traditional chromatic harmonica player who was pretty good. Can't find any of his stuff on youtube but it should be findable on something like soulseek.

Good point, and there's stuff like the Middle Eastern Cumbus which is basically a 12 string fretless banjo from Turkey.

Yeah the chromatic harmonica is somewhat of an analog of the B/C button accordion common in Irish music (2 scales a semitone apart), so some of the ornamentation seems to carry over.

I play Irish music a bit on harmonica, but just regular ones.

It's not that weird I guess, they are definitely used a lot in blues/country rock. Just not something I usually think of.

When I think of redneck instruments I think of wash tub basses and grungy DIY banjos/guitars.

There's a local musician called Shovelman who plays an electric guitar he built from a huge shovel:

Shovelman: Moonshine

I saw him at local fest once and was pretty impressed, he plays as a solo act and basically wails on his shovel  He had a wah pedal or something and was getting some cool psychedelic tones too which was impressive coming from a shovel :crazy2:

Hahaha I'm just a self-taught hobo who learned by imitating the sounds of passing freight trains and I have very little theoretical knowledge - but I make up for it with an excellent ear. I'll look into some B/C button accordion tunes too!

I have a few friends super into Irish trad and I would savour the chance to play along.

I've also wanted to get an octave harmonica for a while now and learn some sea shanties.

I have a cheap tremolo harmonica coming in the mail today, excited to test it out :strokebeard:

The ebay listing says it's made from resin and is "good waterproof" But the specs say it's made of metal :strokebeard:
