Harmonicas

Anyone have experience with them? There are a lot of kinds, been meaning to try some out. Tremolo harmonicas sound especially cool:

They have 2 reeds per note tuned slightly sharper/flatter for a wavering tremolo like effect :strokebeard:

I have distant family member that can play the shit out of one.....always have been jealous cos when you hear a pro they really sound cool as shit especially if you like blues.

Looks solid but I'm leaning towards a tremolo harmonica, Hohner makes a trem one too though called the echo celeste.

Have any of you heard of chord harmonicas? They are crazy expensive, they cost hundreds/thousands :eek:

Been playing for going on eight years. Always have one on me. In blues musician lingo, we just call 'em harps.

Started with a Hohner marine band in C, then picked up a Hohner special 20 in D when my first got crushed - now I have about a dozen different models and keys: A, B, Bb, C, D, E, Eb, LF, and G. I also have a Seydel fanfare-s tremolo in C - super full sound and great fun for playing non-blues melodies.

My favorite keys for blues, in no particular order: A, Bb, D, and E

My favourite blues harp: Seydel session steel

I used to play with a cheap one when i had my Boss RC-50 looper. It was a lot of fun making harmonica beat loops.

Never had an expensive one thou. But the cheap one i had sounded pretty nice.

Lee Oskar makes a really nice harmonica. The standard diatonic harmonica is a good place to start. Key of A is my favorite but Key of C is probably easier to start with. You're not really playing the harmonica until you figure out how to master bending.

Oh yeah I agree, that's why I was surprised they are so expensive. But they are a lot bigger and more complex, pretty much pro orchestra harmonicas. Totally overkill for most people.

It's the same way with other folk instruments like the banjo or mandolin, you can find simple cheap ones as well as crazy fancy/expensive ones.

James Cotton and the other greats played the simple diatonic harmonica, usually a Marine Band in the key of A. That simple instrument can be amazingly complex in the hands of a master. Its all about mastering bends and overblows to open up its full range.

Always wanted to try those banjo finger picks, they seem pretty cool. But yeah it's a weird instrument, I have a cumbus which is a strange Turkish banjo:

Mine needs to be set up though, and it's a bitch to tune with so many strings. Has a really interesting sound though.

Today while busking, someone heard me moaning some blues and then came back to give me a chromatic harmonica - I'm excited for the new musical possibilities this unlocks.

Also, I sure you'll all enjoy this poem:

The Song of the Mouth-Organ
(With apologies to the singer of the "Song of the Banjo".)

I'm a homely little bit of tin and bone;
   I'm beloved by the Legion of the Lost;
I haven't got a "vox humana" tone,
   And a dime or two will satisfy my cost.
I don't attempt your high-falutin' flights;
   I am more or less uncertain on the key;
But I tell you, boys, there's lots and lots of nights
   When you've taken mighty comfort out of me.

I weigh an ounce or two, and I'm so small
   You can pack me in the pocket of your vest;
