I know sometimes you're slow on the uptake; bottom line democracy doesn't work without freedom, it doesn't work without access to information (free and impartial unlike the cocktail of Sana, Fars and RT available in Syria) and it doesn't work if you think you will be stolen away to somewhere and never return if you don't vote for a particular candidate.
