The lowly Ab Wheel - Best Ab workout! * 1
    #24835073 -

40+ Years of working out and having done most everything from the roman chair to hanging leg raises to weighted crunches and so forth; and nothing chisels like the $12 Ab Roller.

I ONLY do 3 sets one day per week for my TOTAL ab workout and it is brutal and effective. Done in < 5 minutes.

All of this and I am still only on level II - a roll out from the knees to full extension with no cheating from glutes or hips on retraction. I can feel a deep ache for many days like I never felt doing planks or tons of contractions.

Jeff Cavaliere, of YouTube fame, does a more intense version using a 135 barbell as a roller. Going out/down is probably easier, but retraction would be a bitch.

The next level would be doing a rollout with the knees elevated several inches above the floor on some sort of platform (I am going to use a phone book as I workout at home).

I hope to attempt my first standing rollout in a few months. As an old fucker, this will require me to work on my flexibility as well as core strength.

Think you are badass? Check this dude out.

Forget doing 100+, just try to do 1.

You want to feel it before spending your month's salary on a wheel? You can use two paper plates or put old socks on your hands and try it on a hardwood or vinyl floor. Use a folded towel as a knee pad.

You can also modify a dumbbell (not a fixed weight one) to try out.

Give us all a report.

a great start, but very one dimensional movement and thinking!

instead of just rolling straight forward, and straight back in,

think of the array of directions that you could be moving in, 10° off center, 45° off center, 80° off center, and everything in-between!

life is 3-dimensional, so should movement be.  try applying this principal to every exercise!  if an exercise is standardly one dimensional turn it into three!

also, pics on your progress?

Good points! I do swerve a bit, but not very much as I do not yet have faith in my strength. One day I did dumbbell swings on the same day as abs and got a minor ab tear. I forget that I cannot push as hard as I would like.

My progress? Well, the good news is I put on 7 pounds; the bad news is my goal was weight loss.

Most of the weight gain was muscle as my waist line did not go up, but all other measurements did (except legs which I barely work - just enough for toning). My large shirts fit tight now through the chest, shoulders and arms. That being said, I am not trying to be a muscle-head. I am more desirous of an athletic/fitness physique.

The other positive is that nearly every workout, my total load has been increasing 5-10% - and I already had a solid base.

What is killing me is that I eat clean for a few days and then get unbelievable carb cravings and binge out. Controlling my appetite is the biggest hurdle for me.

Not ready to post any photos yet. I want to be a bit proud of my appearance.

congratulations on your progress and dedication!  i am enjoying hearing about your journey and progress.

what if when your appetite got out of control you only ate and binged on super healthy things.  I mean it's only so possible to eat so many bags of carrots and containers and hummus.  how many red bell peppers can one possibly eat in one sitting?

in general, the issue seems to be the hyperpalatability of foods.  the brain being stimulated with the pleasure of these foods, not the appetite satisfied.  appetite is a matter if neuroregulation, and hyperpalatable foods bypass the off-switch!

As seen in action here:

(guy can't eat anymore ice cream, eats some french fries, and then is able to have appetite for ice cream again, when his body before he ate the fires was telling him no more ice cream!)

researchers have shown that consuming foods that are rated highly palatable causes the brain to shut down the feeling of fullness and satiety. the more palatable a food is, the less filling it is per calorie.  damn food engineers evolving cookies into mouth watering, fudge covered, peanut butter topped, bacon sprinkled monstrosities!

I forgot about the other ab exercise in my repertoire. I did not mention it as it is primarily a chest exercise, but it seriously activates the core muscles. This can be done with cables or resistance bands. I use resistance bands set at about chest height.

It is a one-arm chest press done standing with the opposite leg of the working arm in front of the other with knees bent, done like throwing a punch, except much slower as I use moderately heavy resistance. I rotate the hips about 90 degrees from beginning to end and can feel my abs tighten and work hard to twist my upper body.

I believe this fits your 3D workout protocol.

Yes!  Hi Orgone.  i love it.

it's an integrated movement, rather than isolation.  also, it ties into the post that you had made on imbalance training, working the body asymmetrically.  and what you had intuitively said about resistance bands before, as your arm returns to the start position it is working incredibly hard to decelerate the momentum of the elasticity of the band.  also, your transverse abdominis will be firing up big time in an integrated-isolation pattern because of the nature of the rotation of the movement.

i teach a whole class/course on these type of 3D movements.  (i did not pioneer this stuff, i am just a student myself).  my students say they have never been stronger!
