ok so I been workin my abs out by just doin 3 sets of 30 situps mixed in with my weights every other day. So here are my questions.
1. Are ab workouts supposed to hurt your lower back?
2. what are some good ab workouts.
thanks

ab workouts should not hurt your lower back, check your posture or try alternative positions

yup and no...
your back will compensate; either doing too much /or not correctly.
the torque machine that you sit on and twist your torso works well

Naw, straight up it shouldn't "hurt". There's a difference between sore muscles when you work out but you shouldn't have out-right pain doing any excersizes.
I would say don't just work out abs and neglect your core. Work in some ab rollouts using a bosu ball, various planks and other excersizes that work out your core. Don't JUST work out your abs. I'm sure you have some sort of routine that hits everything.
I don't have the greatest abs unfortunately. I can feel them, hard as a god damn rock and if I cut some weight I'd be absolutely shredded... but I've got to gain some back after being sick for a week.
abs suck.

Check out the Core Body Exercises. http://www.frixo.com/sites/fitness/exercises.html
Your lower back should not hurt. You are probably using your momentum to do the exercise. You should think of contracting your abs, not moving your head forward. Find a balance by going real slow and working up in intensity.
This is one of the best ab workouts you can do. http://www.bronzebowpublishing.com/video/archive/video_06-6-14.html
Also try hanging leg raises. http://www.dragondoor.com/articler/mode3/329/
