The guaranteed non-conflict diamond has a conflict with me

The color is on the yellowish side of the spectrum, but with 0.05 carat this won't matter much. The clarity is I2-I3 which is quite unclear, this will reduce some of the sparkles the diamond will throw. A VG cut will bring out what sparkle the stone has fairly well and on the up side its a natural, untreated, non-conflic diamond.

I find that the elaborate design from the ring highly distracts from the solitary 0,05ct stone though!

The minute diamond on my altar that I got in Antwerp is 0.1 carat. It is positively tiny, to give you an idea a 0.1ct brillant cut (classical diamond shape) weighs 20 milligrams and measures 3mm across (1/9 of an inch)

If I were you I wouldn't go for that elaborate design either. Of course I don't know your mom but if it's a diamond she wants, a diamond generally looks great in an understated ring (a mere thin band with a setting) so that all the attention goes to the diamond. What many do is buy a loose diamond for a good price, and pay a little more to have it set in a basic ring. If that basic ring is gold, white gold or platinum plated the ring will never tarnish and look its best always. You'd get the highest stone value to ring cost ratio, ie an investment diamond.

A 0.1 carat ring is about 3mm across. By contrast, a 1 carat diamond is about 5.5mm, so a 0.1 carat diamond is half the cross sectio of a 1 carat whopper.

I'd go for at least a 0.1 carat diamond.
