My mom broke her leg.
    #5207517 -

So, I've been at the hospital for the past 2 days with my mom because she snapped her leg in half at the shin. She also fractured it just above her knee.
They had to do surgery and put some rods and screws in her leg in order to fix it. She's been in a great deal of pain, so I didn't want to leave her. They are loading her up on morphine, but it doesn't help comepletely. It's pretty hard for me to see her like that, but I've got to be strong for her. Anyways, I'll post a pic of her xray in case anyone wants to see the break.

I don't think her leg is shaped weird, it just had misplaced bones and was pretty swollen at that point. I mean, I don't spend a lot of time looking at my mom's legs, but I think ordinarily that they are normal.

Absolutely no offense, that x-ray just looked strange. I'm sorry I probably sounded cold I was just being honest. Best recovery for your moms!

She was at my sister's house taking her dog out to go piss and she stepped from a wooden deck onto wet grass and her foot just slipped and her leg snapped. She didn't even land on it or anything. Evidently, her bones are pretty weak.

I hope your mom feels better. My mom had a similar thing happen 2 winters ago. She works at a hospital (Lahey Clinic in Burlington, MA) and we got hit with a nasty snow storm. She slipped and fell, shattered her shoulder and her upper arm. They loaded her up on demerol and ativan while they re-set everything and she was pretty much couch bound drugged up on percosets and vicodin for about a month. Eventually she hated the meds so much (dunno how I'm her son.heheh...) she GAVE like 30 of them away to one of her friends who hurt her back (and also comes off as a closet substance user herself). I couldn't believe it when she told me that she hated the way they made her feel. But I felt so bad for her..she was so run-down looking for nearly 2 months and didn't regain full mobility for like 6 months. So, I hope your mom feels better...

No offense taken and thanks. She'll be on crutches for 8 weeks they said and I'm sure she'll get some good pain killers and some time off of work.

Ouch. Sounds like what my mom will be going through, except she likes the drugs haha.

She's a nurse and she has problems with being there and having people take care of her because she's taken care of people her whole life.

Yea, the healthcare industry is interesting like that.  I have worked in mental health for almost 5 years, until a recent break for financial reasons, and have found that the hardest patients to deal with were other healthcare workers.  Not that I blame them, I totally empathize with them.  You're so used to being in charge and dealing with the flack from your patients, you're then suddenly on the other side of the glass and you kinda see what the patients are so aggrivating for .  I was hospitalized due to a stomach problem last summer and I remember this one overnight nurse kept getting pissed at me because i was asking for more morphine (I was only on 2mgs IV t.i.d., that's fucking nothing!)  Eventually I got it upped to once every four hours instead of every 8 hours but they STILL only gave me 2 mgs, which didn't do ANYTHING.  I begged this nurse to give me another shot at about 12:30 one night cause I couldn't sleep, and reluctantly, she did.  But she was pissey towards me the rest of the time I was there.  I totally remembered working with patients in the substance abuse ward who'd bitch about their methadone doses being too low, or their ativan doses being too low.  I used to roll my eyes at them when they'd whine but now I know what it's like to be stuck in a hospital ward, not able to leave, and NOT BEING GIVEN ENOUGH DRUGS!  Eventually I left, practically AMA because I couldn't fucking deal anymore and they wouldn't give me a script for any type of pain killers which I desperately needed...so I had to turn to a street pharmacist for that need.

Oh man, you're right though 2mgs 3 times a day isn't much. They have my mom hooked up to a machine and there is a button for her to press that everytime she presses it, she gets 1 mg of morphine. She can push the button once every 8 minutes. She went through over 30 mg in about 7 or 8 hours today. Plus they gave her vicodin on top of that. She's pretty loaded.

She just doesnt want people helping her with anything. She's trying to get out of her bed and walk on a leg that just got fucking surgery on it earlier today.

I think healthcare is the last damn thing I'd want to do for a living.

I'm sory about your mother. My mom broke her hip a couple of years ago plus I am a mom (Ythan's) myself, so have 2 perspectives on this, both as having gone through it as a daughter and now being the next generation in line for medical crises of one sort or another.
I empathize with how hard it is to see a parent in pain and incapacitated to some extent. I think no matter how old we are we feel our parents are a line of protection for us, and their weakness leaves us feeling more vulnerable.
Don't necessarly ASSUME that you mom needs you to be strong for her. You can ask her what she would like. Different people need different things when they are facing adversity. Some may want
those around them to be strong, but others want to be able to share emotions and feel that the person they are talking to has them also and isn't just a Rock of Gibraltar. Practical help with details is usually welcome.
Practical consideration: Has your mom had a bone density test, does she have osteoporosis, and if so, is she taking mediccation for it and doing all the helpful things in terms of diet oand exercise? She should be sure to check this out if she hasn't already.
Everyone who is human, unless there is a a terrible tragedy and they die first, has to deal with seeing parents suffer illness, injury, and eventually death. It is an experience that stretched me more ethan any other I've had.
I wish both you and your mother well as you go through this difficult episode together.
Needless to say, if there is anything in your relationship that you feel badly about or feels unsettled, let this be an opportunity to reconnect. We don't have forever to do this!

There is a term for a child that loses a parent; an orphan.
A term for a husband that loses a wife; a widower
A term for a wife that loses a husband; a widow

There is no term for a parent that loses a child, it's just too fucked up.
