Uber Etiquette
    #24774271 -

I used to work for tips as a valet, I feel the pain of service with no tip. It was the best job ever though.  That being said, do you tip your Uber driver?

If it’s a $9 ride I’ll give them a $10 and not get change back. So basically... if there’s a bit of change left I just let the Uber driver have it, even when leaving the rest of the money with the Uber driver it’s cheaper than a cab

Taxi/Uber - 15%

Low-Mid Priced Sit Down Restaurant or Diner - 20%/$4 minimum (more likely to split tips with cooks and whatnot)

High Price Sit Down Restaurant - 10-15% (higher price anyway, less likely to split with cooks)

Hotel Room - $10 on the dresser if I have room open for them to clean the room or if it's the day I check out. I usually have a do not disturb sign though.

Hair Cut - $4-$5 unless they rush it in order to accumulate more tips. If so, and it looks like shit, $0. I especially hate it when I ask someone cutting my hair to touch something up and then they do so and then put some kind of gel or hairspray in my hair without asking. It's a subconscious message that the haircut is over and that any more touching up is not invited. With that said, I've found an awesome barber shop 4 or 5 months ago and haven't had to deal with that since.

A Bar - $1 per drink. I've settled on this rule and will stick with it until death, even as inflation goes up.

Uber is literally just an unregulated taxi market.  The only real difference between the two is that Uber calls itself a "Transportation Network Company" and, beyond not being compelled to give a shit about whether you live or die, literally write their ToS so that you waive the right to hold them responsible for anything that your driver does.  Aside from the fact that they go out of their way to ensure that they aren't actually doing effective background checks on their drivers, your driver doesn't even need to be registered with the company (which means that whether or not they do any background check at all is sort of a moot point, even ignoring the fact that they check names against a databases that you can have your name removed from).  And that's just for starters...

And yes.  They do treat their drivers like crap.

:takingnotes: The numbers seem reasonable. What about valets though?

I live in a town of 8000 people there is one Uber car with 3 different drivers. I haven’t had any issues and everyone pretty much know everyone... maybe in a city this would be an isssue

On long uber drives like from a airport I think they earn more than enough without a tip. On a short trip maybe...

I actually just took an uber for the first time earlier tonight. This is a pretty small town so I doubt he gets a lot of business. My girl asked about weirdos and stuff and he just kept saying we don't carry cash on us. Which really didn't answer the question of a lot of people do weird shit not because of money.

I tend to be a good topper for sit down meals, but other than that it's a dollar or two or nothing at all, unless the service actually is exceptional.  That never happens though.

I don't get why people are paying Ubers with cash though.  I thought it was all billed on cc through the app, and now they give the option of tipping afterwards through the app.  I personally don't think it matters much if you do or not, but I usually will give a dollar or two because fuck it.

I would never use a valet by choice, because I don't want some random person driving my car.

Uber drivers give out their cell numbers to customers so they can bypass giving Uber a cut.

Ahh ok I see, I have only used it a handful of times, but for me not having to have cash is a definite benefit, as I often don't.

Well... I use to hotbox farts in the regular customers cars who pissed me off by throwing a dollar.  I do understand that perspective. It was only like two people in the years I valeted. I never got called out though interestingly enough.
