I found a 1964 Thunderbird for sale. Worth it? * 1

So the car looks great at first. But then I checked underneath it and it appears to have a lot of rust underneath.
The guy is asking $6500 for it and I want it really fucking bad. I didn't video the body and interior too much, but just know that everything else looks beautiful on it. What I did video is the

You should ask about it's history. If the paint is original I'd say its fine. It looks like a lot of surface rust cause the undercoating cracked off. I don't see anything structural but then again I really don't know shit. Stomp on the floor pan and see if it moves lol. You don't have a muffler but that's not an issue.I saw a small piece of the body that was rusted out at the very end of the video. Sanding and filling is all that would need.

No I certainly would not, I mean who has time to work on that?  Maybe try offering $500 cash on the spot to find out if they're desperate, but I figure if it was a deal someone would take it, even not knowing anything about classic cars.

It looks rough.  Things are going to go wrong there.

Not for 6500.

Here's one for 6500 that's almost all original, has 75k miles and runs... https://classiccars.com/listings/view/988281/1964-ford-thunderbird-for-sale-in-lewistown-montana-59457

There's plenty more on that site in better condition. One for about 8k that looked pretty clean. Most of the really good examples go for 12-20k.

The body and the interior on the one I'm looking at look WAY better than the one you posted. The body has no rust and the interior is spotless with new carpeting. It's only underneath it that looks fuckered up. I'll get another video when it's daylight, but the rest of it seriously looks gorgeous.

Yeah but all original = worth more than something that was rebuilt with aftermarket parts for example. Do you know if the one you're looking at is original? I'd be a lot more worried about rust underneath the car than on the body panels. It's a lot easier to repair/replace body panels than say, working on the frame. Without being there to see it myself it's hard to say whether it's superficial or not.

You try flaking it off or punching a key through it or anything? Especially on the frame or anywhere that's structurally important.

Yeah, to be honest I don't know how much of it is original. I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to vehicles. I didn't even know the difference between a frame and the body until you said that.

If you don't know much about cars, take my advice and walk away. I'm not an expert but I've been largely responsible for all repairs on our cars (and checking over new cars we buy) and if there's anything I've learned, it's that there is always at least one or two unseen/unnoticed problems for every few ones you spot, and that's when you know what to look for. If you have no idea what to look for, what looks like a solid car could actually be a money pit that would cost you more to fix than you paid for it (even at 6500). Unless you know someone who knows what they're looking for or take it to a mechanic and have them take a look, I would honestly walk away.

The fact that it doesn't run (which itself is a whole can of worms) is not even my main concern. Although that is a big one. At 100k miles, who knows what all is wrong with it. If it's been parked a long time then whatever was originally wrong with it, likely isn't the only thing wrong with it anymore. Engine problems are a crap shoot. Some are cheap and easy to fix, others not so much. The main issue is the rust. Surface rusting is fine, but it's very difficult to determine how deep it goes just from looking at it. I was looking at buying a truck not too long ago where rust had eaten through the frame and the frame mounts where part of the suspension went broke loose. It still drove, but a pot hole could've caused me to lose the front wheels. I looked around at my options on dealing with it and found out the cheapest and easiest thing to do would buy a totaled truck with a good frame and replace the frame entirely. Not exactly an afternoon job or a cheap fix. That would've put the costs of the repairs at about 4 times (at least) more than I was paying for the truck itself. And at least 2-3x what the truck was even worth.

I'm not being biased against what you're saying, but I do want to mention that the car DOES run and hasn't been sitting for long at all. The engine has also been rebuilt.
I just wanted to mention that in case it had any sway on your response.

Bondo is just shit they put on the car if there are dents or rust to the steel body of the vehicle
It can reduce the value of the car
I've actually taken a magnet before buy to check if the body has been buffed up
Sure it looks good, but it's not completely classic
That could help bring the price down :wink:
If that doesn't matter to you then don't worry, it really doesn't effect how it runs whatsoever
You should show a video of it running with the hood up though
