simple light question
    #2457388 - 03/21/04 03:17 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

Would a 50watt grow light from wal-mart be enough to get a small plant through the veggy stage(1-2) feet,, before I put it outdoors?

Thanks,
boomer

Probably be a little lanky (not thick and bushy) but I don't see why not!

Use a cool-white compact flourescent bulb, don't buy any incandescent grow lights even if it says its for plants. Fluorescent bulbs are much more efficient.

ya I had a 12 inch flourescenton it in the first place, but I can across this plant light so I thought id ask.

Does anybody have any objections of useing both the flourecent and the 50watt, or would that be too much light for one plant?

if this is cannabis your talking about you can have as a thumb rule that 45 W per squar feet is good enough, and also that the light has the right color spectrum, ie lights with blue in it will promote growth for all plants

You *could* get it through, but not in any respectable condition.

floro's can work for growing but the lumen output (intensity) is very low and cannabis prefers a high output type light. a good light to go with would be 100-150w metal halide (HID) or a high pressure sodium (HID). don't get me wrong they will grow under floros, they just tend to grow smaller and slow. as someone else said, don't use incandescent lights, they're the wrong spectrum and put off way too much heat...stressing the fuck out of the plant.

peace

Flouro's are great for growin man, the only downfall you get from flouro's are bad light penetration through the canopy of foliage, but whatever is close to the light will grow great. For instance the plants in this pic were grown under nothing but flouros and they look pretty good to me.

The pic shows 4 plants in 5.5" pots, taken a month and a week after the seeds were planted. They've had ~ 60w per sq. foot most of there life.

So far, but 1 50watt grow light will not sustain it for very long. So if you're waiting for it to get warmer out and the days longer, you have several weeks yet and thus the poor lighting will begin to take it's toll. Setup some compact fluorescents and it won't be as bad.

Now when you say compact fluorescents are you refering to the little tubes rather than the fat ones you see in office buildings and such,Because at first I had a little 12inch(compact, I think)fluorescent, it is one of those ones that can be ran off AA batteries or a plug in, and I just didnt think it was anough,

Compact fluorescents are the ones with coiled up tubes that screw into incandescent sockets.
