Are foodstamps and welfare recipients really better off than a working individual?
    #24519986 -

I keep seeing these articles pop up here and there and that after affordable housing, cash benefits, social programs and food stamps and single individual could recieve something like 35k a year off non taxable income provided by all the programs etc.... Something like the equivalent of close to $20/hour.

Is that true or is it just some made up bullshit from the right? It sounds made up but hey, could be real.

Is it bullshit or are some (and I say only some) people on welfare better off than people working?
Have you  ever met someone on welfare that seems to have a better life than you?

the right complain about spending and taxes, then they complain about the "welfare leeches" of society, after they get sent off to wars, and come back on medicaid- all while the leaders they shuck and jive for have no incentive for sound fiscal policy that'll keep them out of war in the first place.

:delirium:

One person won't likely get all those benefits. Affordable housing/rent geared to income for instance is hard to get into and they typically cater to families and disabled people. The waiting lists are long. Could someone potentially get all that? Sure, yeah. Especially when you consider food and rent and utilities, ect. There are a lot of services these programs will provide. 35k would be for those people who milk everything for what it's worth.

No there not they are given scraps and told to fuck off basically. The myth of the welfare queen is a conservative invention meant to demonize the poor and paint them as scoundrels. Another myth is that the poor don't work this is patently false many hold multiple jobs and are still barely scraping by. Without the poor the economy would collapse. Should work be incentived of course but its pointless if the jobs don't pay a living wage and the poor are still forced to take subsidies to survive. One way or another we are paying for the poor we might as well attempt to enact laws that give them some level of dignity instead of pretending they are subhuman compared to the special holy rich people.

the left complain about the price of everything...all while asskissing their corporate hounds to throw more money away at everything, while making everything more expensive- the numbers go up for the country in terms of sales, ect, many different requisites for different facets of trade and society at large- they try to engineer motivations for spending, that fail, and then try to subsidize portions of the government to attempt further coordinations, and institutions such as education, medicine, law, ect- to keep the government working as a corporate entity, so as to keep in place a model for structuring society in a pacifistic state. prices go up for tuition, living expenses, such as food and housing, and eventually inflation causes goods to become more expensive, causing the necessity for greater trade constraints, taxing, and strategy. bubbles ensue with inflation- hyperinflation or no...potential for alliances faltering rely on trade deals going through. possible collapse if no market incentive for goods of particular nation states. brain drain and alienation from immigration of top minds and skilled workers for corporate necessity creates welfare state. people eventually become reliant on government control for their value system and market incentives.

Because prices continue to rise and wages haven't followed suit. The working class standard of living is plummeting and yet we are still told the lie that if you just pull yourself up by your bootstraps you to can be wealthy. The US crushes people with medical bills and college debt giving the wealthy a massive advantage. Social mobility in the US is much lower than other first world nations because the free market system is very good at keeping the poor in there place permanently.

When I was going through college to get my Registered nursing degree I had a young son and because of that we were able to get a very small amount of benefits. For 2 people we got $37 a month to spend on food. Well my schedule changed to where my job couldn't accommodate my schedule so I ended up unemployed trying to find another job while in college...my food allowance went up to a whopping $69 a month...for 2 people, with no income.

This was 10 years ago and I used it for a total of 6 months at 20 years old but you tell me if that's enough to live on...when I see these articles about snap recipients using it to buy steak and lobster it pisses me off because I know for a fact that is so far from the truth. Go buy a steak with that small amount of money if you want to but you won't be eating anything else for the rest of the month. As far as housing goes I used to run the front desk of an equal opportunity housing place and those people would be on a waiting list for 2 years and still pay 300-600 a month because it is based on income and if you can work but don't you are not getting into those places... I can't vouch for medicaid but I have worked for hospitals and medicaid frequently does not pay the hospital because of nit picky little things so the hospital just gets stuck with a bill they can't charge anyone for.....merica

If that was Canada you would have been given $150 worth of food and supplies for the little one each month and been given maybe $1100 a month to pay rent and live off of, plus you'd be getting $600 a month for CTB.

Canada also has higher social mobility than the US gee I wonder why . Invest in your people and it will pay dividends well beyond what the social program cost.

The ones I know?

fuck no. They are barely scraping by. Being poor sucks and it is a vicious cycle, there is truth in the expression "it's expensive being poor". I have a friend who has had to resort to foodstamps recently as times have gotten particularly tough - she said she feels ashamed when she goes to the grocery store, I told her that she has been paying into this system her entire adult life and this is exactly what it is for, she still continues to pay into the system(not unemployed, just a single mother and underemployed) now, and she will continue to pay into it afterwards when things get easier - there is absolutely no shame in using food stamps to feed your family when times have gotten tough.

the steak thing makes me lol. I'm sure some people do in fact use it to buy steak and lobster but that steak and lobster is NOTHING like a 30 dollar a cut steak or expensive lobster, do people not see 6 dollar buy one get one free cuts at their grocery store like I do?? God I've seen 4 dollar cuts of steak that are no doubt tough as leather, but still steak nonetheless.

Well I know in my state for a single individual you cannot get cash assistance unless you are disabled.  And you cannot get food stamps longer than 3 months unless you are working or disabled.

There's also 2 different kinds of disability payments.  If someone was making good money and had enough work credits then they might qualify for SSDI which could get them up to $2,687 a month (that would be too much to qualify for food stamps).  But if they didn't work at all or only a few years before their disability then they could only qualify for SSI which would be up to $733 a month.

The state I was in before you could get cash assistance (I never had that) if you were actively looking for a job, they would also pay for child care.....one of my friends decided she would "actively look for a job" for 8 months, she got like $200 a month and it still blows my mind that anyone could live off of that.

PB you're lucky if you can find that, I've never seen any $4-6 cuts of steak here...maybe $10 if you're lucky and find something about to expire which makes 0 sense because there are cows everywhere you look here. I don't remember steak being that cheap back in GA either...my point was that most people would rather have ramen and a full belly all month than one night of a good steak.

From what I know, people in Ontario get something like $150 on top of rent paid for for welfare as well as free prescription drugs.

The grocery store around here has chuck shoulder steaks for $2-6 for 1 lb and they are not tough at all imo.  There's also ribeye steaks for about $10 for 0.7 lbs.

Edit:  I take that back.  Chuck shoulder steaks are pretty damn tough.

in my state a single able bodied adult will get about $130 a month of food stamps, they just have to say they are homeless

if you have kids you will get about $450 a month in food stamps, plus cash, plus medical, plus housing

very often I am in line at the grocery store and I see a mother with 2+ kids using food stamps, but somehow the mother has the newest iPhone, brand new jordans , and the kids are all decked out in the newest cloths too

I'm all for state assistance to those truly in need, but if you can somehow afford a new iPhone, jordans, blinged out jewelry etc, then that's when I think its bullshit

No. It's not.

There are some jobs that make welfare and food stamps more appealing but you can't live civilly on food stamps. Toothpaste, soap, deodorant, toilet paper, towels, clothes, cookware, and other basic shit isn't covered.

I fuckin shop lifted all that shit on food stamps.
They wouldn't put me on welfare because I wasn't homeless and the people I lived with had work. Well one person had work. One person supporting 6 already on one pay check. I think he made like $20 an hour. The 2 kids had WIC but the mother was reckless. Which is why she had 2 kids with no work.

Anyway, by the time I actually was homeless I found out it's easier and more profitable to sell drugs.

Also meat prices vary alot by region.
Dollar steaks at the dollar tree makes normal people sick but ya know for some reason not poor people... Probably because they're used to not eating real/good food.

There ya go. There's part of the problem. You just have to lie to be fed decently well.

They should give people benefits who ask for it they make it so hard with the damn hoops you have to jump through.
