Mycelium or contamination?
    #2439232 - 03/16/04 02:24 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

Hello all, this is my first time using grain for a substrate, these are a mixture of wheat berries and birdseed. They were pressure cooked at 15 PSI for 1 hour 15 minutes, inoculated on 3-12-04 from a syringe. Kept in temperatures 72-75F. I know it is low, and I am trying to devise a new incubator scheme.

Is the growth you see here the beginnings of mycelium, or some sort of contamination? If my nose does not lie, I think I smell an odor of mushrooms, though faint.

What do you think?

How long has it been post-innoc?

The tiny speckled white growth looks like mold to me, but I have seen growth look that way from a heavy mycelium-slurry innoculation. I'd give it a little more time, but it looks questionable to me.

3.5 - 4 days post inoculation via spore syringe. Doesn't look good, eh?

no it doesn't [look good]...

How did you inoc.? Did you just spray some in there and shake it all around or did you just let some run down the glass? If the former then it could be mycelium although it really doesn't look like it.

I inoculated by letting it run down the glass, and into the middle of the jar, about 2 cc in each jar. I should probably add that the three jars that have this type of growth were used as controls for some jars that were inoculated but went bad due to bacillus, and thus they sat around for about 1.5 weeks before the present inoculation which contributes to their dryness. I have the feeling this is contamination.

Back to the kitchen ...

It does look like contamination. Probabably, it will go green over time.
Sorry ....
