I have noticed an increasing amount of signatures of posters, at least in mushroom cultivation, which are nothing but ads that link to spore dealers websites. These websites promote an advocacy program where if you use their little ad in your signature, you get some kind of deal from them.

there is stuff like

Quote:
www.sporeworks.com <<<--- get your spores here!

Quote:
HIGH QUALITY MUSHROOM SPORES AND CULTURES AT www.muShrooms.com

Honestly, I just feel like this shouldn't be allowed. Doing so skirts the traditional avenues of paying for the designated ad space on this website. I doubt having retail ads in signatures all over the boards was the original goal of its creators.

Dealers should be made to pay for advertising, which in turn supports this website. By allowing this, shroomery.org is being taken advantage of by retailers that advertise on this site for free.

I understand that some of these sites may be sponsors, but simply being a sponsor doesn't mean you get to litter our boards with your ads. Your ad goes in the designated banner, and thats where the ads should stay.

Dude I was just thinking about this earlier. I completely agree. I don't know why any member
would agree to let a company use their profile as a spot for free advertising, as if 12 bucks
for a syringe is that much:lol:

Thank you for your feedback. I hadn't really noticed this was a problem and was wondering what you were on about, then I realized I have signatures disabled.

All the companies running promotions like this have to be sponsors; we don't allow non-sponsor advertisements. So they are already paying for ad space, and in the examples you mentioned (mushrooms.com and sporeworks.com) I believe they are literally our oldest two continuous sponsors. They've supported the site for well over a decade and probably paid five figures to help ensure our smooth and continuous operation. So I wouldn't necessarily say we're being "taken advantage of"... we usually have pretty good relationships with our sponsors, we know the people behind the companies, and we are truly invested in their success. If this strategy is working for them, I feel bad putting an end to the party. It's always possible to block signatures, globally or on a member-by-member basis, and disable images in signatures, so it's not like it has to be that big of an inconvenience.

At the same time I totally hear what you're saying, we emphatically don't want to be one of those sites with a million ads between posts, in the sidebars, interspersed with text, etc. We have specifically demarcated space for banners and it would be the easiest and most consistent and straightforward policy to simply restrict all advertising outside the banner slots, period.

I'll discuss this with the other admins and we'll bring up the concern with vendors and try to figure something out.

I'm not diametrically opposed to the adds in signatures but it does  conflict in my head with the idea that we don't name where we got our spores from in Mushroom cultivation.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention.  I have always discouraged graphic-format and direct-link advertising in non-sponsor signatures (even if those ads point to one of our paying sponsors), although I will admit that we have become quite 'laxed on this policy as our membership population has mushroomed, simply on account of it being difficult to identify and remove every offense.

Nevertheless, this discussion has been revived and it is apparent that things have progressed in a direction that we do not wish to see continue.  I'd like to note that Mushrooms.com, one of our most steadfast and honorable sponsors, didn't do anything wrong here, as indeed this type of incentivized marketing can be mutually beneficial to both the for-profit entity as well as the incentivized advertiser, and we had not previously made an explicit directive that such activity would not be welcome here (or if we did, it was literally like ten years ago).  I have generally dealt with this on a case by case basis.

The bottom line is that we want to keep our site clean and our advertising controlled, and we do not wish to foster an environment where members insert advertising into their sig's because they are being incentivized by the highest bidder.  I sent off a note to Mushrooms.com about this earlier today, as well as informing our team of moderators.  However it will probably take a little while to catch all the ads that have cropped up, so if you notice anyone with a for-profit ad in their signature, kindly refer them to this post or send an admin a PM so that we can remove the advertisement and provide an explanation.

I really appreciate it, guys. I used to not care about them, but it seems like their popularity was growing really quickly. I was not looking forward to the day I'd open a thread, and every single comment would have one of those, and I'd have to scroll over an ad after every single comment.  Thanks for your time and consideration.
