Collecting unemployment if you are working

So I'm curious about this? I worked with a guy a few summers ago that said he was collecting unemployment while working because he never notified unemployement that he had a job. Clearly this is wrong, but, isn't he going to get caught by taxes or something?

I know in some states you can work part time and still collect but I am pretty sure if you try and trick them you'll get fucked pretty hard.

Yeah. The government will figure it out when it's time for you to file your taxes and they will bend you over to pay back all the amount you collected, plus a 10 or 25% penalty and a 1% per month interest and you are fucked if you want to collect unemployment again in the future.

That scam has been attempted so many times it is a regular occurrence.

You would have to work under the table order for this to work. Or just have a job where theres
no traces of you receiving income (like being a drug dealer)

They have undercover agents that investigate fraudsters. When he is caught, and he eventually will, the state will sue him for their money back and he will lose.

One of my first jobs I was a pizza delivery driver for a small mom & pops pizza place. They just paid me under the table, so there was no real record of me working there.

In cases like this, you'd be able to collect unemployment without the government knowing, since there's no paper trail of you working at that time.

Outside of situations such as these however, if you're collecting unemployment AND still working another job, that's under record, I'd say that there's very little chance, if any, of getting away with collecting unemployment at the same time without them knowing.

Something needs to be doen about that. I'm sure that it  costs the gov more money to hand out food stamps than it cost the in corporate tax revenue to increase the minimum

Well, I know they do for disability, seems like they would for unemployment too. Since apparently disability is one of the most commonly frauded government programs, after a car accident people will often pretend to be disabled when they're not, so the government will send undercover agents to spy on people collecting disability to try to snap pictures of them exercising at the gym or playing basketball or golf or whatever, to prove that they aren't really as disabled as they claim.

I know they do it for a lot of government programs, so probably for unemployment too.

There is a chance he won't get caught, of course. The government is notoriously bureaucratic and therefore a lot of mistakes can slip under their radar.

But, if he IS caught, he would get sued for all the money back, and he would lose. And technically they could put him in jail too for lying to the government. I think when you sign unemployment paperwork, they request paperwork from you every couple months. And on their paperwork, it states at the bottom where you sign, that you declare that everything that you are saying is true, and if it is found to be false you can be found guilty of perjury or something like that.

The government is something you don't ever want to mess with.
