Could be a court order.  They hand deliver restraining orders.

Never very good to have a cop at the door.  Could of been an incident they think you may know about.  The form could of been a witness statement form for you to fill out.

He might have only wanted directions to a doughnut store.

In Scotland cops come to your door in pairs.

If they come malevolently they always wear their hats, and if it's a mundane visit they leave them in the car.

Either way cops should be treated like wasps..

Some of them won't sting you to death..

While others wake up dreaming of doing that.

Update: A blacked out unmarked SUV just drove slowly down my street. Spot light on the side and all that so it was no doubt LE. However I do live in somewhat of a high drug area so they could have simply been doing a drive through to look for any suspicious activity around. Still spooked me though.

I'd lay low. If they come back tm answer, just make sure you've cleaned house and know you don't have to let them in or really even talk to them.

Call the station and tell them your neighbors mentioned seeing an officer knocking on your door and you wanted to make sure everything was good.  Better than having them just show up again.

Cant force themselves in w/o warrant!!! Thats a joke today,
  If you open the door, they plant a foot in the doorway immediatly...

If you attempt to shut the door then you are endangering the officer and they will pull you outside by force...

Then they view from doorway and say they heard a gun get cocked or smell drugs or see drug Parafanalia yadda yadda.. They end up getting there way..

You can fight and may even win, but the expense and time served are never worth opening the door or responding/replying

Get you ducks in a row immediatly and then call a lawyer...

If police come to your home aside from you calling them, never answer!
If someone is threatening you with harm, your better off dealing with it yourself because you may become a victim just by involving police, and the person that you saw as the threat is usually a lesser threat then the police themselves!

I just checked. I don't. Funny thing is, after he said that, I shut it on them anyway and they grabbed me and pulled me out of the house and proceeded to beat my ass. And then charged me with assault on a officer. fml

That would never fly, not even in a castle law state.

He would be serving life in prison for murder of an officer

Yeah, it totally wouldn't fly, but it doesn't mean it's not legal. When you're dealing with cops or the justice system it often doesn't matter what the law actually says. If he had enough money and a good lawyer it might work.

That sucks man. I'm glad my county recently started requiring the police to wear body cams at all times.

He was probably serving a summons and complaint or a restraining order.  Either way, it's better to know than not know.

I would have gone out the back door then come around and talked to him on the porch...see what he wanted and dealt with it outside. Sheriffs usually only transport prisoners or deliver summons, etc. like Enlil said.
